Dear Community Members,

Over the past year or two, there have been updates to the environment that have introduced challenges in usability and performance. Efforts to improve the technology, user interface, and site performance has revealed weaknesses in the platform and outdated software this site uses. This has made it increasingly difficult and frustrating to support and upgrade to more modern reliable standards that users deserve. Our advertising experience and certain ad partners have further degraded the functionality of the site. This is not the experience we want for the members of this community.

Members want a fast site that performs well across all devices, to be able to find relevant and interesting content, and easily share through text, images, video and messaging on a secure platform. Our goal is to provide this ultimate user experience to all members.

We will be implementing a new platform to better meet the needs of this community and allow us to provide support more efficiently. Our focus is to create a sustainable platform that performs well, and loads faster on all devices, while offering seamless ways to search and connect. Technology is constantly innovating - by creating an environment that we control we can maintain the site with more frequent improvements and maintenance updates.

Although change can be difficult, we are here to support you through the process. We make every effort to review existing settings and make the changes needed so the migration goes smoothly. If you notice something doesn’t seem correct once the site goes live, don’t panic! We’ll have a dedicated person monitoring as the site goes live to answer any questions and provide support through this change.

What’s next?

I bet you’re thinking, “What does this mean for me and the community?” It does mean change, but it will help solve a large majority of the issues that this site may have been experiencing. We have reviewed reported issues, site statistics, traffic data, and user feedback to help us prioritize the changes and improvements. Uploading an image or video will be easier and streamlined. Ad formatting will change with a new site layout. The site will be more responsive - there is no need to use a mobile skin or special app! Security and user privacy will continue to be a top priority.

When will this be happening? Soon! We recognize the user experience is slow and there are bugs from the outdated software. The sooner we can change that the better we can make the experience for you. You’ll start to see activity related to cleanup in preparation for migration very shortly. We will post an announcement to the community prior to starting the actual data migration. Once the migration begins, the site will go into maintenance mode and will be read-only while data is being migrated.

We appreciate each member’s contribution to this community and look forward to an improved experience for you all.

- Community Support

Hopefully it will be as stated and user friendly across all devices.
I use Tapatalk myself because at the time it seemed to make the forum easier to use. However, there are still minor limitations with it, like the inability to see or participate in polls.
I look forward to not needing Tapatalk. Especially since this is now the only forum I participate in. Accessing multiple discussion forums within one app was handy but is no longer needed. For myself, anyway.

<SNIP>. Can you moderators try out the complete change b4 it is released to the general membership?
.
I don't think so, as I understand it, the board will be Read Only while the changes are put into place then the whole board will "reopen" functional for all.

Site maintenance is a big deal and pretty intensive as it is.

Thank You!!!

I hope the improvement will mean the removal of the invasive ads. This site has long been the worst site for intrusive ads. Pop-ups, pop-unders, floaters, redirects, video ads that start playing without being opened. This site is basically unusable without heavy duty adblockers running. I love the site and the community but hate the in-your-face belligerent ads.

Sounds good but the write-up is completely subjective like when is "soon?"

The best part is I trust this company unlike many big companies is not large enough to have change for change sake. Most changes are just some software engineer trying to justify his job with pointless changes.

I am looking forward to changes for the better.

Hard nut to crack. Changes current users will like while attracting new members. Good Luck with this difficult task.

I suggest that the new software be brought online in "test" mode, so that users can use it and try out the new options, without their posts being saved. I also suggest that this be done before the cutover, to give us a chance to hit the ground running when the new site is "live."

that's the software the monkeys use - I don't see what's better, seems like a downgrade for users - I don't like 2 column block style section list for index page (and live chat would be a nightmare here), don't like the ugly default letter avatars, will we lose user data like join date, etc displayed with each post?, don't like the chopped off "and X others like this post" ... but I guess it will be useable

Part of the issue is vbulletin security, and the add-on security. Nothing is getting updated.

At one time we had a live chat, but it took a load on the server and I think there were security issues.

We have slowly lost a lot of features over the years.

I'm wondering like what other changes will be made other than security and etc. I'm wondering if certain parts of the forum will disappear like say, The weapons sub forums or the political section?

A couple forums I was a members of did that. I know this place was sold in July to some left wingers who have done that to other forums they bought so i'm wondering if this is what we all got so upset about in June finally coming to pass.

Just call me skeptical that this will be better or will it go to hell in a handbasket. We will see.

I have been on line using computers and BB-S since 1990's. In the recent years I have seen Yahoo Groups dissolve into a heap of manure, WinXp demolished for Win whatever, and Firefox for Android become unusable.

All this with promise of "improved user experience". I would be leery of any promised improvements unless fully vetted. But I am guessing this change is being foisted from way above by the Corporate Canucks. So probably a done deal.

Upgrades worry me too. I'm using Vista and chrome is no longer supported. Youtube had a nag screen for months telling me their upgrade will no longer support my browser, etc. I have had no problems using it though. But I do run into snags on a lot of newer sites. And my old laptop doesn't have the ponies to run anything newer and I'm not willing to upgrade it even if it did.

I want to take a moment to introduce myself in case you happen to see me lurking around the community and wonder why I am here.

My name is Cricket. I live just outside of San Antonio, Texas. I spend most of my free time out in nature and exploring the back roads. During late autumn when it starts to finally cool down, I disappear from the world for a bit for camping trips and hiking.

I also want to give you an update on the process I use once the site goes live with the new platform.

The night before the site goes live you will see an announcement from me that the site will be going live soon. Once the actual process starts, the site will be in read-only mode while the team does the migration from the old platform to the new one.

Once it does goes live you will see an announcement thread created here in this section. All questions and feedback about the new platform should be posted ONLY in that thread.

You will then see my reply to the thread to introduce myself.

I will add a new signature and avatar to the admin account.

What should you be doing now before this happens?

  • Make sure your email address is up to date in your account.
  • If you don't remember your password, now would be a good time to reset it. Save the information.
  • The link that displays all your attachments on the site will not be available, but all attachments will still be in your posts. It might be worth taking the time to browse through the attachment list to see if you want to add anything from there to your albums for easy access later.

When Will This All Happen?

SurvivalistBoards.com is currently scheduled for October 20th. HOWEVER, the schedule is very fluid, so that could change depending on any complications or schedule changes. I am simply giving you a heads up.

As your dedicated support, during the transition, I will be here with you multiple times a day, answering questions and listening to feedback.

My only request is that you remain patient with me while we work through the changes. :)

All of this is important.
ANDI want to reiterate the importance of making sure your email and passwords are up to date. If you have any issues, let me know in the Grievance section, PM or here and I can help you.

If you have pictures saved in your albums and you don't have copies, snag them as they may not make the switch.

Please hit us with questions so we can help make this transition as smooth as possible. Time is drawing near. :)

Fingers crossed that the hidden bummer factors are minimal. After all, this IS 2020....what could possibly go wrong?

I have been in a staff position for many years now and some have been here longer than me. The antiquated format of this forum has caused increasing issues and glitches over the years. We have only half of the functionality that we used to, we can't give awards nor can we search things properly. It took nearly a year to fix the VIP issues. The servers overload because of the software, not capacity.
Although I was not a huge fan, we lost chat function. And let us not forget the increasing security concerns.

Instead of an upgraded format, they have found a way to transfer us to a brand new up to date modern forum. Win10 spyware? probably, but if you are using your smartphone, too late. Just be ready to update your browser addons and run with it. I am looking forward to a more user friendly place to do what we do. We have been begging to get some functionality back and bring it up to date.

*PS I plan on downloading all of the files in the file section, or at least index and source it all. They have not discussed that treasure trove yet. I plan to make them available if need be, but I would grab some if you feel the need or have been putting it off. If someone else has a spare drive, it would probably be a good thing to make a copy as well. Just a thought.

Maybe Cricket can address this.

*PSS If you have pictures uploaded to your profile and you don't have copies, grab them as they may not make the trip over.
