Maverick 88 or H&R Pardner pump

Both are good guns for the money, IMO. You can find either for well under $200 new. The Maverick is an economy Mossberg 500. Same internals, different safety location. The H&R is a Chinese-built clone of the Remington 870. Almost all 870 parts fit, except the barrels, which I recall have a different extractor cut location. The Maverick has the standard Mossberg aluminum receiver. The H&R has a steel receiver. I've had several Mavericks...they all worked great. I gifted my brother with an H&R (after a buddy who owns a gun shop told me the many he has sold have been trouble-free) and my bro loves his. Pretty much even-money, IMO.

i would vote maverick since its made in the USA.
i just bought a maverick 88 last week and i cant wait to blast turkeys with it.
you cant beat the price, either.
parts and mods for it are easy enough to find.
you can always buy an 18.5" barrel to swap out for home defense.

Hope you enjoy it. The price seems right. The older HR or NE stuff was great. Let me know how it shoots!:thumb:

Got to pick the Mav, again, for parts concerns. I like the Pardner Pump, have been suggesting folks buy them for more than a year, but if you're in *this* forum, repairability and parts replacement is a key concern. If it's a second gun, go for the Pardner, but basic gun? It's a fool's choice.
The Pardner, based on the 870, has the same probs with certain key parts wearing and breaking....and the #1 part broken is the ejector spring, followed by the rivets holding the spring and ejector. None of which you can repair or replace yourself. As I just finished telling a guy in another forum, replacing those parts is a $75-100 gunsmith charge. Riveted parts are the bane of the 870 and all the 870 clones.
The Mav, on the other hand, the ejector is a $7 part and can be changed by you inside of two minutes by candlelight if need be.
The Mav shares all functioning parts with the Mossy 500 and parts are cheap and incredibly easy to replace. The Mav can be used for hunting or defense etc with the 30 second switch of a barrel.

Actually Maverick is made in mexico for Mossberg, that's why it's cheaper. I do Have one and love it thousands of rounds and not 1 problem.

: I bought a Pardner Pump (synthetic, field barrel) for $160 in 2006. I've neglected the crap out of it, and have at least 4,000 rounds through 'er. It typically sits in a truck, which in Minnesota is usually a bad idea. I cleaned it once after dropping it in the dirt while field dressing a deer I shot with it (was a big oopsie on my part, so much dirt I could barely slide the action). I have never had a failure of any kind. I am an equal opportunity shooter, this is just my experience. I have a pretty nice Mossy, and have used friends Remmy's and Nova's (love 'em all), but I still hunt with this ugly thing.

Go with the Maverick. Mine has been great.
they USED TO BE MADE IN MEXICO now its texas, and they used to only have one cocking arm, i used to have a mossberg 500 and i know a 500 inside in out as far as parts, the maverick is the same damn gun with a cross bolt saftey unstead of a tang safety like the 500, my buddy has a maverick 88 18 in we've put about 800 rounds thru it since he got it about 3 months ago, its had the **** shot out of it, i've had it apart and every part wouls interchange with a 500, he went turkey hunting with us last wekend and barrowed a buddy's 500 regualr length barrel to use on his gun just couse he wanted to use his gun, he shot it with the barrel no problems, i bet the trigger assembly would swap out, but if u put a 500 trigger assembly in an 88 the gun will have no safety, just a thought not saying it should happen, sorry bout the rambling

The Pardner Pump is a great shotgun and worth alot more then they sell it for. I have an all cammo one i bought from ****s for $200. The paint job on it is outstanding! I took it out goose hunting in the poaring, freezing rain. Dropped it in the mud. Brushed it off and still shot a goose! Took the gun home to clean it out and it was absolutely loaded with water and muck. If anyone tells you that the Pardner is a good gun "for the money", they are wrong. It is the BEST shotgun "for the money". I seen them for $130 at ****s the other day!
i also found myself asking myself the same question because i dont own a mossberg any more, and my buddy has the 88, if i get the 88 i can swap barrels with him and my freind that has a moss 500, if u got any buddies with the mossberg go with it, then u guys could swap out short barrels, slug barrels, and bird hunting barrels
