Not too mention the millions that worked all their lives, paid taxes and HAVE TO CONTINUE to work because of all the fricken entitlements these bum's get that won't go out and do their fair share. How can they increase the money the elderly get? It's criminal what they are given to live on. Many of them have health problems are at age and can't retire. All that money they paid in, That has to be the biggest crime in our history.

I will never be president. I would suspend all aid to anyone that has been on the program for over a year. I do understand it takes a while to find a job. Hence the year. I would give you the option of keeping your children or not and let you ALL fricken become homeless and starve. The exception to this would be people applying for disability or somebody with a real reason to not be able to improve their lives after one year and apply for an exception. The people that got kicked off would all find work or can go to their churches. The Churches used to provide for the poor before the government started in the entitlement business, that is why churches don't have to pay taxes. LOL but they don't do that now do they and they still don't pay taxes. Sound's harsh? Well life's harsh. I'm tired of supplementing people's drug dealing business's and other illegal activity. I would suspend ALL foreign Aid. Get out of NATO and throw the UN out on it useless corrupt arse. Dissolve the Federal Reserve and pass a balance budget amendment. I would dissolve homeland security and shrink the government to a quarter of it's size. All Imports would decrease to things that this county is unable to produce. Or more than likely Impose tariffs that would make all imported goods cost more than American made good's. This is why I would never become president because I could fix the country in 15 mins. I would also make a student visa a very rare thing. We educate most of the worlds terrorists and their followers. Then lastly our justice system. I would impose HARSH punishment to judges that do not follow the law's of the constitution, In today's system they rule based on their political party's belief. And no more interpretation of the constitution. It's in fricken ENglish. they wrote what they wanted to say. The twisting of the meaning of our amendments by what these clowns think they were trying to say is a joke.

PS McDonald's is hiring
McDonald's doesn't pay well enough, the work is incredibly boring, and the customers treat you like they are better than you. I worked there for a week many years ago, and swore upon everything holy I would never go back. The job was incredibly depressing, which leads to more health problems. The wage is hardly enough to live on, even by my incredibly frugal standards. I'd go live in the woods first, it would be a hard life, but I wouldn't feel like a slave.

I'm not a baby boomer, but I am looking for a job. I gotta get something that pays better than McDonald's since I have to start paying off student loans soon.

Who could live off of what they pay people?

I fully expect to have to pitch in on my mothers retirement in few a few years. She´s already retired but get by at the moment. I also fully expect to receive pocket change, if any money at all, when I retire.

When asked about surefire advice for a good retirement an economic journalist at Swedens state televison said: "I have two tips to give you. The first is to pay off all debt, the second is be nice to your kids." That is all we have, folks.

That is NOT OK with me! I do NOT INTEND on working another 30 years in order to jusat pay the taxes and SS that I will NEVER GET to even look at! I will have paid in over $500,000 by then.....FOR WHAT?!

That is TOTAL BS (I'm ****ed off enough now after already having put in over $200K in SS taxes).

I would try and help my parents, I am not an ingrate. I'm just not grateful for our Govt Mule spending money that wasn't/isn't theirs to spend or give to Illegal Immigrants!

But, on the other hand, many Baby Boomers know the risks in continuing to smoke cigarettes and IGNORE them, only to TAX the medical system beyond it's capacity.

All over America tonight, millions of elderly Americans are wondering if their money is going to run out before it is time for them to die
holy crap what will we do??????
how did we possibly survive prior to 1935????

when i was growing up my family still took care of our elderly or sick family members untill they died, would a return to such unselfish traditions be so bad.

******************

Not everyone HAS family members who will help them.

I was a late in life baby born to two parents who both survived the 1930's Depression the hard way. Growing up, I heard a lot of horror stories about that era......including the fact that people without jobs just wandered aimlessly looking for scraps of food everywhere.

My Dad was a farm kid in Pennsylvania. When he got out of school, there were no jobs to be had. So, he walked and rode freight trains to Detroit in hopes of finding a job, there. And very nearly starved to death before he actually did get hired at a steel mill where he continued to work until he retired. I do recall Dad telling me that he saw a lot of people who had just crawled into doorways, or into alleys, or behind buildings......and just finally given up, laid down, and died.

Thinking that people in the 30's "always" had help available from their family is a nice fuzzy fantasy. Unfortunately, it isn't true. Many did not. And a lot of those were kids, too.

Middle-aged (X-Gen) and younger people are already familiar with the Boomers that won't retire. What jobs they don't down-size, off-shore or outsource they keep for themselves until they're probably half-senile.

Very few senior/management openings for the X/Y-Gen.

Worse, the Boomers are even taking up low-skill and low-pay work at the Big Boxes. Whenever I see a Boomer working at Home Depot or Target I'd like to ask him why he's keeping a teenager or 20-something out of a job.

Maybe they're not just afraid about their own economic future, but they want to make sure that no money or opportunity passes to future generations?

Do you really think boomer's are working at the big box stores to keep the youngsters down?

Do you think boomer's would enjoy working in such an environment just for the thrill of keeping their grandchildren's generation unemployed?

Do you think this was their big plan all thu out their working life?
Working at a low skill/wage job in the so called golden years?

I think some folks might be giving the boomer's way, way. way, too much credit for the "money/job control" claims...

The debt ceiling is raised while the debt is downgraded, the bailouts are demanded under threat of martial law (see congressional testimony on YouTube), banks are not lending, last summer they tell us recovery is underway when the opposite is actually happening, the value of the dollar continues its decline (see this on any USDX graph), jobs continue to go overseas for the past 20 years, our borders remain broken, the US continues to borrow money from private banks instead of minting and backing its own money (federal reserve notes are foreign debt instruments). Hmmm, all of this does not happen by accident, so to me this adds up to a controlled demolition of our economy. No conspiracy theory here, just observing and judging reality for myself. Others should do the same for themselves. Put the puzzle pieces together and form your own opinion. It's an important action step toward becoming more self sufficient.

I said get a skill that will get you a job.

I know nothing about the Greek job market.

Maybe he has a useless PHD.

Somebody with a degree in Engineering is far more employable at this time than one with a Phd in Anthropology.

#21 ·
Right, and I said, you are assuming there is a job out there for your skill.

There might be 2000 applicants for every engineering job available out there.

Earlier this year, there was a janitorial position open at a local school. 700 people applied for that job.

McDonalds went through 1 million applicants and hired just under 6% of them, and that's only because McDonalds is exempt from providing the mandatory healthcare.

People are going to better off being self employed, rather than looking for a job that might never appear. Worse still, to go into debt with student loans, in the hopes of a job afterwards.

The Greek market is a microcosm of what we will soon be facing as a nation, insolvency and austerity.

It all kinda makes you wish that we were still teaching personal responsibility where people took care of thier own lives doesnt it.

1) Social Security was NEVER intended to be your sole source of income when retired, if it is then it is you who failed to prepair for your future not everyone else.

2) It was this same group of people that insisted on projects to boost thier own egos that in turn got funded through the raiding of SSI, so its just your chickens coming home to roost. I know its harsh but its the truth.

The problem is that with the housing boom (and bust), college tuition boom and health care cost boom, the reality of the situation is that Americans are barely left with enough money to save for tomorrow, let alone are they able to accumulate enough wealth for retirement.

The really harsh truth is that we would need no such thing as socialized retirement (social security) or socialized medicine (medicare for the elderly) if jobs actually paid a decent wage and cost of owning real estate wasn't so ridiculously high.

But I couldn't name a single Western nation where this is the case today. People are earning peanuts. It's as if these social programs were designed to encourage industries to pay their workers less.

Hubby plans on retiring at 44 as thats when our baby girl turns 18....we worked hard when we were young and instead of racking up CC debt and blowing all we had we bought and paid off a house and started a savings account....

Hubby works with guys that determine how many hours overtime they need to pay there bills instead of planning how much they pay out by standard 40 hour weeks....they are living paycheck to paycheck begging and borrowing to keep up....$200 dollar a month cell phone bills (I spend like $13 dollars every 3 months)....2 new car payments (I bought our Cars with cash usually from tax returns each year....you can get good deals with cash....we have 3 cars in near new condition interior and exterior wise with low miles....one 88 truck with less than 89,000 and two 95's with less than 130,000)....eat out every night and then complain about being overweight and broke (we eat out maybe once every other week)....got every new gadget known to God....CC's maxed out transferring balances from card to card....

My parents taught me how to not live beyond my means....they are living debt free and make due with what my Mom makes doing bookwork for 2 small businesses each month and 20-30 tax returns each year....they grow alot of there own food (although when my mom recently broke both arms we had to help alot around the house)....they have no credit cards and no payments on anything....they knew they were gonna eventually get old and wanted to enjoy those years....not work work work till they were dead.

My pension got turned over to the Gov't's Pension Guarantty fund which promises I think 20 cents on the dollar .I am just Barely under 55 my social security is mostly gone so I won,t collect that and both my 401k s were drawn out with penalties to live on so I planned and am still screwed out of my money I EARNED. My house is payed for . I payed cash . So tell me how many on here have family members drawing SSI when they have ADHD, BIPOLAR ETC when most, not all of the recieptiants Just need a swift kick in the ARSE to modify their behavior.

When you go to Walmart ,Lowes etc and put your app on their computor system it asks if you or a family member is on gov't assisstance . If you are not ,YOU DON"T get a job . IF you are on assisstance you do because the GOV'T Pays to train a person for 90 days to get them off the dole. Thats why so many get released at 89 days . The CORP wants another 90 day wonder so they are not paying the wages ,(min. wage SO THE TRAINEE STILL QUALIFIES FOR FOOD STAMPS AND MEDICAID) SO CORPORATIONS DONT HAVE TO OFFER BENEFITS thats why alot of us the sustain our selves with No help from the dole can't get a job. Some of you high and mighty folks need to check this out or is the reason you can tell us to get a job is YOU are the recieving end of this and have money to flaunt. All businesses can apply for this benefit to help people get off the dole.

#35 ·
I do not know how this tax benefit is applied in your area, but I was informed by an HR person that his/her company continued to get tax breaks as long as the applicant was retained and kept "off the dole." Perhaps he/she was just telling me what I wanted to hear. Any HR folks on the forum feel free to chime in.

Thanks.

@ LadyFenix:

:_ ( _ _ _

Hear what you're saying.

@ wallydog:

Do you understand the medical causes of bi-polar, major depression, schizophrenia? That comment is like me saying, gee, any diabetic/heart patient/insert medical condition of choice here who's on SSI should just suck it up. Their condition is just their imagination. All it takes is determination and "mind over matter...if you don't mind, it don't matter". Am I saying there's not fraud in the system? No. But making sweeping, generalized statements leads to dehumanization and possibly genocide if worse comes to worse.

I watched my dad suffer from major depression for years. He was on meds and worked all his adult life, never "copped out" and went on disability. There were times when I worried that he was suicidal, but thank God he never attempted it.

Also, medical arts/science believes there is a genetic component to mental illness, just like there are "predispositions" for heart trouble, etc. It's not "hard science" like chemistry. Just because a person has the predisposition, does not mean he/she *will for a fact* develop said mental illness. After doing some research, I discovered there is a history of depression on *both* sides of my family. Ergo, I watch carefully for symptoms of this condition in myself and other family members.

I wish i could thank Lady F more than once because she is spot on regarding that generation. I see the poverty of those ladies every day in my section 8 elderly housing.

And for the most part, they do suffer in silence because they come from the great depression generation where asking for help is a failure. We have a real problem there with malnutrition as these folks run out of funds sometime in the 3rd week of the month and just make do that last week. Because of that, we started a community garden where we can dole out veggies and stuff to the people who need it.

What we run into now is that these old ladies are trying to weed the garden, drag out the hoses etc, do something to "pay" for the food they get as they do not want charity.
Sad part is, this work ethic was never passed on to the boomers and most of these ladies have boomer kids who do not check up on mom or dad and have the means to put them in better places than our facility, but dont.

Let me get this straight..
If we (boomers), paid into SS our entire working lives, then begin to collect that monthly check promised to us.... that's bad.
And if we invested in the market, directly or via something like 401k's, ...for our retirement.... then we actually do cash in our chips.... that's also bad.

Sorry, I usually read your posts, but enough is enough. Too much sour grapes. When is the last time you laughed out loud, or even smiled?

Ignore list.

OT.

Wally,

Truly, I do not mean to pick on you. I saw the word "most" in the post about ADHD, bi-polar, mental illness. I offer this link:

http://www.nami.org The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. While I do not agree with them 100%, they have much data (sometimes government, sometimes independently derived), regarding the numbers of mentally ill in America -- diagnosed and in treatment, diagnosed but not in treatment, and undiagnosed. (From a survival/prep POV, this is the info I was most interested in.)

But more telling is the employment data. Even before 2008, employers did not want to hire anyone with a diagnosis of mental illness in their records. Don't ask me how employers find out, I don't know. I asked and was brushed off. Yes, I'm sure it is a risk to hire the mentally ill and must be considered on a case-by-case basis. That said, I can't imagine how hard it must be for someone who has a psychiatric hospitalization in their records to try and find a job in this economy.

O.T. completely: And the comparison between research dollars spent for effective treatments for heart attack, diabetes, etc. outstrips research dollars spent for meds to keep schizophrenics from having delusions by about 20 to one. Heart patients are often employed full-time. Schizophrenics usually (not always, but usually) have their first episode when they are in late teens/early 20s. Ergo, they start out their working lives behind the 8-ball.
