Haven't given blood in 10 years because of the mad cow disease scare - served in countries that had it.

So how does one go about "appearing" gay?

Tasteful clothing that matches? Could be married, could be gay.
Doesn't hit on a nurse? Could be married, could be gay.
Maybe the guy asked for directions to the site.
Or maybe he didn't scratch himself in the waiting room!

I'm honestly curious how it was determined that this guy "appeared" gay.

In the UK if you are a homosexual you cannot give blood, its complete common sense as the gay community is far more likely to be carrying blood born STD's such as AID's due to their practice of having unprotected and even protected anal sex.

The medical community know their job better than we do.

I can only LOL at this, and i don't know why. I wish the article had a picture of the gentlemen in question so we could decide the case for ourselves. and a copy of that screening questionnaire.
"do you frequently use products in your hair?"
" do your jeans have holes that were in them when you bought them?"
"are your clothes 6 sizes to small?"
"do you have a rainbow sticker on the back of your prius?"
"have you recently engaged in anal or oral intercourse with someone of your same sex?"

I mean, Really?

It's a terribly unPC thing to say someone looks gay.

But I asked a gay guy how he recognizes other gay men for dating and such.

His answer. "I can tell by looking."

SO I guess it is possible, and in fact necessary to "look gay". That or no gay man would ever get laid.

OK now back to you regularly scheduled PC outrage.

I have sold blood products when times were tough. I have had to take blood products when times were even worse. Not that you will ever know who's blood saves your life
(does it really matter?) but personally if I could choose - I would choose the gay person over ANY of the crack heads, tweakers and alcoholics I shared a waiting room with at the red cross.

All the blood is now tested for STD's now.

If the blood supply were as contaminated as you believe it might be, people would be dropping like flies. Now I don't know about you but if I am dying and a pint can save me BUT there is a 50/50 chance I will become infected with some other illness because of it, hook me up, I'll take those odds and cross that bridge if I come to it.

Yes it is. But tests can miss things.

It's all about risk management. If you take blood from a high risk group then you increase the chance of infected blood getting past the screening.
