I've been looking for a low-cost small form-factor night vision option that I could stick in my bag when I'm on the road, since I can't afford to buy a second high-end device, which also tend to be too big and bulky to carry around regularly. I came across the Carson NV-200 on sale at Amazon before Xmas so I thought I'd try it out.

It's incredibly small and uses 3 x AAA batteries, but it work surprisingly well for what it is. I'd say it's effective out to around 50'-60' in total darkness with the IR on high, and around 100' or so if there's some available light. You need to spend some time getting the focus adjusted, and like any IR NV device the image is going to wash out if you try to look at something too close with the IR active.
To keep it protected I carry it inside a Silent Pocket signal-blocking bag, which may or may not protect it in case of an EMP/CME, but I figured it was worth the small investment:

There's even a video on YouTube on how to make a mount for it that clips onto a baseball hat brim so you can use it hands-free:
Yes, I realize that night vision is something that you should invest in to get a quality device, which I have done, but I wanted something I could always have with me when I was away from home, and this fits the bill nicely.
