Losing Eye Sight

Might as well share this with people:

When I was 5, I was injured in my right eye with a metal rod. I lost the lens, half the iris and it was covered with scar tissue. When I was 15 the scare tissue was removed and some sight returned. Nothing great, just light and shadows.

Now over 3 decades later I seem to be losing the remainder sight. A large black spot in my vision has appeared and is spereading. Encasing the black area which is in the bottom corener of my line of sight is an occassional light streak. kind of looks like lightening. I know this is a bad sign.

I have chosen not to go running to the ER and wait for the eye doc office to open tomorrow. I expect the news to be bad. There is no real use runnig to the ER to save what little sight I have...if it can be saved. (if it was my left eye I would be there right now)

My current SHTF situation I have put an eye patch on my eye to keep the light down to a min...it hurts the eye.

So, I thought I would share this and let you know what happens as it unfolds. I will not be seeing my normal doc so I expect to be poked and prodded a bit.

Perhaps the information I report may help someone down to road.

I'll pray for healing and I'll pray that your eye doctor can use his talents to heal you. I'm sorry to hear about your eye. I'm sure it must be disheartening. I'm only 51 and am already very concerned about several crushed discs in my lower back. I feel like an old man way before my time.

Anyway ... I hope your story has a happy ending.

Maybe you'll get better news than you think hopefully. Take good care of your good one. My Mom had MD (macular degeneration) and it was scary for her. Hang in there.

Thank you guys,

I am waiting for the office to open this morning to call. It could be retina detachment. It has the symptoms of it. Black spot with flashes of light.

I know I have scare tissue attached to the retina and the doc always checks to see if it's still there. His main concern is my one good eye.

It is scary slowly watching what little sight you have be stripped away. Hope they either do something to fix this annoying flashes or tell me what to expect and how long it will take.

Currently I have no vision in right bottom part of eye. It's alsowly spreading. Started late friday with I thought was a large floater or hunk of scar tissue. Got worse yesterday and steadily growing. I have a set doc appt for fri but I don't think thie eye will last that long.

would hate to show up at my reg doc's and say "surprise."

going into office cause they at least have my records. An Er would not have that.

Good to go to a specialist. ER doctors are awesome and necessary but they're not specialists (in most cases) in any particular procedure so they probably would have put a patch on your eye and advised you to see your eye doctor (which is what you did and are doing). Bring us some good news. :)

thought I would describe what I'm seeing. My eye was injured when I was little. Have half the iris, no lense and scare tissue. Doc said it would appear better if I lay flat. This doesn't seem to be the case.

when I lay flat I see a huge dark spot over half my eye. Right side of vision. What looks like flashes trace the outline of the dark area. (the dark area is supposed to be where the blood is.)

When I stand up the area drops to the lower right corner of the line of vision. I still see the light streaks when the eye moves or blinks. I also see what looks like a floater that comes and goes.

Doc said what would happen with no surgery is the retina would detach and eventually the eye would turn white and shrink. (Doesn't sound good either.)

got back from follow up. doc said I had a small tear but I also have a number of thin spots. Have air bubbles inside my eye (he put them there) to help stabalize retina. Will wear off in about 12 days.

I can see light but that's about it. where the air bubbles are it kind of bounces and jiggles like jello. wierd.

I also had the same thing, gaseous bubbles to stabilize the retina. Not fun to get those removed...the reason everything is appearing to look like what i am assuming is yellowish jello is because the images your eye is sending to your retina are being obstructed by the bubbles, therefore you see the bubbles. Like a piece of dirt on the lens of a camera somewhat.
