This will serve as my first post, long time lurker, first time poster.

My hobbies include shooting rifles, shotguns, handguns, hunting, fishing, backpacking, and growing organic food in my backyard.

That said I have recently been bitten by the "survivalist bug" not because I think the world is going to end tomorrow. I have just come to realize that I need to make some more preparations should something really bad happen. I feel fairly confident that I could grow my own food and have a seed storage as well as some food (1 year veggies canned) put up. But I realized that I need to be able to protect my family, my land, and my supplies should the worst happen.

Like I said I own 28 guns .22s up to .338s in rifles (all bolt action for hunting), .420s to 12 gauges in shotguns (All also used for hunting besides a mossberg 590), and a Sig .45 220 compact (for carry/dresser). What I need to feel prepared is a Main Battle Rifle. I have never owned an AK or an M-16 since I couldn't hunt with em. I am looking for Semi-Auto chambered in .308 that is reliable and capable of defending me and mine from the bad guys.

The reason I want it in .308 is that I know the caliber and shoot it often (at least once a month) in my Remington 700VS. Plus the .308 I feel confident will put someone in their place should it come to that. I know that there are some good rifles in .308 for the "preservation of liberty" like the FN FAL, the M14, the AR10, etc. But due to the recession I am on a tight budget I have put aside $1000 all told for this project and can't spend a dollar over.

Can you help me find a rifle/rifle project that all told will put me back $1000 and help defend my family if something bad happens?

Look at the Saiga 308. On another thread, a guy is making converters to use less expensive mags. Mag and ammo cost are a big reason i went with 7.62x39 rather than 308.

Throwing money aside, my choices (In order) are:

M1A Scout rifle (Change out the break)
M1A Standard
FAL
HK pattern rifle.

Good luck getting one under $1,000. You waited too long.

Go pick up an AK47...

Is there anything in particular wrong with the FAL previously listed? I have shot a saiga and didn't particularly like it. If I am going to shot .308 semi-auto (semi-quickly) ill need a pistol grip.

And to all other posters thanks for your input I love the M14 as much as the next guy but I'd have to work a second job to afford it.

Any other suggestions of things to look at?

I would either go with an FAL or a MIA, as my suggestion, but you will have ti pay over a $1000 for them.....I prefer the FAL, but I do like the MIA......

I did say under $1000 which is why all M14/M1A's are outta my league. But the Imbel Fal that magfed556 shared isn't above $1000. And the mags are cheap evidently, any brands I should be looking for there?

I know you said UNDER $1,000 l2Y4N, which is why I am stunned folks keep suggesting a $1,800.00 rifle, and thus the sarcasm.

Is it just me?

Here is kind of a stupid question, but have you thought of selling some of your other guns so that your budget goes up? I recently purchased an M1A, but to afford it and extra magazines I have to sell 3 guns and all the ammo I had stocked up on for those 3 guns. I only had $1,200 budget to start with, now there is an extra $700 with the sale of those guns.

By the way, you can put pistol grips on those Saiga's and occassionally at a gun show you will see a Norinco or Polytech M1A for under $1,000. Someone mentioned a CETME, they are in the $600+ range. Another rifle in a full power cartridge is the PSL druganov rifle around $800. The 7.62x54R ammo is around $80 per 440 rounds in sealed tins. I would have gotten that over the M1A to compliment my Mosin-nagant's, but I've really been wanting the M1A.
