Propane lanterns are common at resale shops. Have several Colemans and never a problem. They do eat mantles though and unless you refill you cylinders or use a bulk-tank adapter, the cost is incredible for fuel. Hard to beat the convenience though.
For emergency use, you get much more service out of a oil lamp. The wick will last almost forever and spares are cheap. Stanley mantle wick oil lamps burn with excellent lumen quality, but again the wicks are fragile. Buy a 5 gal tub of kerosene at WallyWorld for $35 and an essence oil that you like and you will be set. Get a Toyotomi heater and you won't need to worry about heat if you're Up North. (Just keep a window cracked for venting!)
Nice to have the Coleman reflector on your propane lamp to get the most outa your effort, and the plastic carrying case is also worthwhile. Get the bulk tank adapter and a cookstove so you'll be set. Maybe a propane burning refrigerator? Check lehmans on those or your local RV retailer.
If you are gonna go with the small bottles of fuel, look for Bernz-O-Matic tall bottles. They refill better than the Coleman squatty bottles. Northern sells an adapter for about $20 to let you refill the small bottles from a 5 gal tank. They do work, and enable decent economy.
