I hike in Salomon Trail Running shoes. Not just for day hikes and around camp. I have worn my trail runners for the entire John Muir Trail (3 weeks). I used flip flops for camp shoes. Obviously, I am into ultralight backpacking. My pack without food and water weighs in at 16 lbs. If you carry a really heavy pack you may need to have boots and camp shoes.
