fun idea....but a mere $1m ain't gonna even pay the legals for normal startup..never mind the international waters..UN, etc that will be involved.

and hello come storm season..ask the boys on oil rigs how fun it is to ride out a blow..never mind where to go when a hurricane/typhoon comes through.

now if they include a luxury cruise liner for temporary evacuation, and or a submerged section of the city..the next Atlantis I guess.

but in the end, if they take as long to develop a govt as they are taking now to figure come up with the mess we have, well....i guess if they don't have a ghetto the won't have a welfare problem...but who's gonna clean their kitchens for them?

I can see it now...the beautiful platform city towering high over the sea, while beneath the platform sits an old worn out cruise ship to house the servant workforce..by day, the servants go up to maintain the new world, at night, they go down to a subculture world...this would make a cool movie/book.

All you are missing is the big old flashing light to all the pirates to come and rob you blind and destroy your "perfect" city.

They're overlooking Antarctica. They could have a whole continent!
Off limits.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctic_Treaty_System
Article 4 – The treaty does not recognize, dispute, nor establish territorial sovereignty claims; no new claims shall be asserted while the treaty is in force;
Article 10 – All treaty states will discourage activities by any country in Antarctica that are contrary to the treaty;

It can't be claimed as a territory or enclave by any government, new or existing, by any of the treaty members, and any treaty member agrees to prevent not treaty members from engaging in those activities.

Hmm, concrete barges, decent defense system, free trade... it could work. They would have to be HUGE to avoid issues with storms/waves though. Not impossible, just difficult.

Isn't Paypal anti-gun? Denying people their rights doesn't sound very Libertarian to me.

But I do like the idea of a limited government country. I would definitely consider jumping ship from this country if we keep going down the socialist road.

Can you say really really big sail? The wind load alone would be a major issue.
I can see a constant battle with undesirables. Have to have it's own garrison.

US citizens pay federal tax on income regardless of where you live or where you earn it. The only way you can avoid that is to renounce your US citizenship and then good luck on getting back into the USA, and you will never get that citizenship back again.

The cheapest and easiest way to have a country of your own would be to just take one over. Either through force or by bribing the target government into granting special voting rights to resident foreign nationals. Then they just "legally" get voted into office.

From there it is just as easy as pie to re-shape the banking , military, judicial and anything else they want that would most benifit them. Like how the mega-wealthy have done here. With enough money it would be a very easy thing to do, the hard part would be if they wanted it to appear totaly legit to the rest of the world.
Unless there were to be some suspicious loans made to the target government which just by chance defaulted and had to go into receivership, then it would be all legal .

Yes it would , nice and legal............

This reminds me of that guy who purchased a retired oil rig in international waters and was granted status as a sovereign state. He managed data servers and charged people/companies big bucks to store their sensitive data out of reach from any government agencies. I wonder if he's still in business.
