Liberal... Does it mean something different in the US?

I see a lot of "hating" on liberals on these forums and then I wonder if it means something different "over there"

Over HERE (Denmark) we have the socialists (high taxes, stupid high welfare and gubberment wants to mother everyone... and the liberals who want low taxes, much less welfare and want to handle their own with less gubberment intrusion in their lives...

Sooo... What does it mean over there in the big US of A?

In the US liberals are the Socialists...the two are one in the same here.

What y'all call a "liberal" would be either a Conservative or a Libertarian in the USA.

Liberal in the US equates to the socialists that you describe in Denmark, Littlebits.

ok thanks, kinda odd since Liberal should mean the same around the world... Guess not.

Just wish the socialists would roll over and die and stop sucking on the gubberment teats... Running my country into the ground.

They are masters at manipulation of language over here, they have taken the word over to further confuse their stance on things, Socialist is still a somewhat dirty word here and though things are getting more and more accepting f socialism it is still very risky for a politician to identify themselves as an outright socialist despite the fact they actually are....

easier to hide your true agenda if you simply change the name of it...

Socialist is a dirty word and should be as long as it pertains to what it is the world over today.

completely agree, i don't believe ANYTHING that is not centered around personal liberty and responsibility to be a good thing....

that said though you'd be surprised at how many young Americans actually support socialism on some level.... it's bloody sickening... heck seattle has outright one on their city counsel, that's where all of this $15/hr minimum wage B.S. is coming from...

Personally, I don't mind the "liberal" tag.

But then I'm only liberal with ammunition, pepper spray and excessive force.

True liberals who believe in little government interference, lots of freedom, and individual rights over collectivist control are called "libertarians" here in the US.

The Republican party claims to be the party of fiscal responsibility and morality. It seems to stray far from that ideal.

The Democrat party is often known as "liberal" although they're the party of Marx and socialism.

In the US, the political term liberal means the opposite of what it really means.

Since there are only two parties that matter in USA, there is no real left. They have never experienced the type of social liberalism we have. So they think their liberals are really to the left, but from our perspective it is more centrist. So when they talk about socialism, they mean about the same as we do when we talk about Social Democrats. When we say socialist, we more mean Socialist People's Party or even further left.

And yea, what we call liberalism spans from centrist to right.

You yourself misuse the word socialism, what we have is social-liberalism.

In the United States its the oddball Nazi Communists that want to ignore Constitution and change our economy into Socialism. They also want only the police and the Government to be the only ones with firearms.

I see it's completely opposite in your country.
