Let's talk about dogs for a minute.

How many of you think like me and find dogs to be an essential part of your preps?

Admittedly, I'm a dog person. If my wife wouldn't divorce me, I'd have a houseful.

Having said that, I think that dogs should serve more of a purpose than just companionship.

All dogs can be useful, protection, early warning system, hunting, guarding family or livestock......

Fortunately for me, I've passed on that same love of dogs to my son who just got his first dog of his own.

We welcomed his Belgian Malinois to the family this week.

Care to share a pic of who's watching over your flock?

I would say that I am not really a dog or cat person, yet I have a Chow/Cattledog mix mutt and two cats. Not that I do not care about them, but more so that I can easily exist without companionship of animals. I got my mutt "Easy" (a rescue dog from Oklahoma) for my two Daughters as a pet. He has been a fantastic boy and is a great warning system and buddy. Yes dogs are great preps in my opinion.

I have 4 They're all rescues

Ones' getting on but she won't admit it
The next one is a blood tracker that seems to have developed agoraphobia she'll go out if she's accompanied.
The third one I acquired. Because I'm soft hearted and he was on the list. So, I drove 2 hrs one way to pick him up ( must stop looking at rescue fb pages.
Last one I got about 6 weeks ago.
Running down the road in a storm. He's solid black he's so long legged I thought he was a black deer, he got on the shoulder and fell in a heap so I opened 5he door and he jumped in.

Dogs have been survival partners with us since 6K BCE. They are essential even if it's just to give us someone else to focus on.

For better or for worse. Lol. I sleep good with them around. I didn’t intend to have 4 big dogs. It just happened.

There’s valid arguments to be made for and against regarding dogs for survivalist companions. I think it depends on the situation. But for average basic home security I think nothings beats dogs. Even little ones with a lot of bark.

We have, and love, both. I couldn't imagine life without them.

This is Clark, our lab mix, cooling his stuff after running around.

Wrestler,

I love dogs but not able to provide the required support due my specifics.

The picture of your family member is beautiful !

Personally speaking, I'd subordinate the early warning system, protection aspects and catalog dogs as a key item in one's IFAK. A German Shepard's wet nose and breath are more therapeutic than the overpriced RX pharma in med kits.

You've got son on the right path.

I'm a dog person (deathly allergic to cats although I like them). In our house we have a small pack of large dogs: pitbulls, labs, mixes. They have been keeping us safe for years. I would not want to live in this neighborhood without them. We walk them three times a day so everyone is well aware they're here.

I hope I never have to live without a dog companion and I hope I'm able to keep at least two even as I get older. Dogs need a dog buddy, even the best owner cannot do for a dog what another dog does.

This is the vicious, killer Chihuahua name Sophie.
If you're not careful, she'll bite your ankles or fingers, if you try to pick her up.

She's better than a doorbell or security alarm, though. She always turns into the Tasmanian Devil if alarmed or irritated.

Mogli, your dogs ROCK! They are beautiful!

We used to have 3 black labs over the years, but sadly, we lost our canine friends way too soon.
All 3 protected us at different times from people trying to break in. TC, Magnum & Sam. RIP, run and play in the big open fields of grass. I hope Heaven has tennis balls! 😆

Not kidding, but for such a tiny little nose, Sophie snores worse than my wife or me. Seriously! She's LOUD and saws a log with a chainsaw every night.

Here's Moose, he's 90lbs. We got him in December to replace his predecessor who we lost last May. He's a good boy and is the best doorbell ever. He's already caught a squirrel out back.

Thank you. 😊. I think so too most of the time. I dread when it’s their time to go. Two are 6 and the other two are 4. It seems it takes time for the relationship to really develop and then pretty soon they’re gone.

I’ve had black labs since my childhood and raised my kids with them. Then due to current events I chose shepherds which I really love too. But labs rule. My oldest son just got his 2nd lab after having the first one for 9 years. Labs are awesome.

Sofie is adorable and I’m positive she will alert you when necessary.

I used to have a horses named Luger and Panzer. 😂🤣
