Sustainable sources for water. Your own well, lake, small river, etc in combination with the possibility to store water in different form of containers plus different means of purifying water.

The most critical area is not the different parts by themselves, but how the parts come together so that they provide a system that allows self reliance and a sustainable solution over time. I highly recommend Jared Diamonds book “Guns, Germs and Steel” on this subject, if you don’t have the time to read the book check out the National Geographic documentary with the same name.

for this to be a more valid stream I would want to know the region (cold, temperate, hot, etc.).........but my main point would be properly constucted buildings...... partially underground for ease of heating and cooling and also protection wise
