I'm pretty sure I saw a thread about this before, but I couldn't seem to find it searching.

But I was browsing the LDS cannery sight and I've noticed that just about everything is out of stock. Is there anyone with any insight into this? I'd love to order a few more things from there. But if the wait will be too long I may just pay the extra elsewhere to get it sooner.

The wife and I buy from them. We called the facility in Dallas just last month, 2.5 hour drive to make sure they had 'X' amount of product. They did not. Then I asked them if I could order for the next shipment. I want to say they stated 'they no longer do this', but I could be wrong and they might of said 'we do not do preorders'. Not sure...

They, couple of different phone calls, two different ladies, did not seem to be too concerned about anything themselves. Just that demands from outside of their church has their shelves a little more emptier than usual

Most all LTS food places are short/back logged/out of stuff...people are waking up (Mostly too late, but hey, a can of soup is a can of soup) and trying to make up for lost time by buying anything in sight...ever see someone try to build a BOB in one weekend?...I did and its an interesting experience:rolleyes:

I had noticed on the site that they're still taking credit card orders. So I would assume once they get to you for your order it'll get billed and shipped. So I may still place an order and hope for the best. I'm in no huge hurry any how. Just looking to add to my supply.

When planning your food stores you should think of what you use daily, weekly, monthly.

Are you used to cooking from scratch ie. preparing foods from dried beans, other legumes, grains?

Do you have diet restrictions.

I remember the seventies (yep I am an old fart) all the rage was textured vegetable proteins for long term stores. If you have issues with gluten or msg then that is not the way to go.

Most Wal-Marts have on their shelves dehydrated foods in number ten cans.

Most health food supermarket will order 25/50 pound bags of rice/beans for you, if they have none on the shelves.

Many parts of the country have food co-ops/food buying clubs.

You can also shop Sam's Club or COSTCO for bulk items.

Think on what you use and store it and rotate it.

Learning to cook at home saves money although it does take meal planning and time to decide what to cook.

A lot of folks are use to instant foods via fast food outlets or take out places.

We have our fair share of prep failures in not using up what we had before it went south ie. tomato products and bulging cans.

We have used far out of date food with out ending up in the ER and somethings we tossed due to insect infestation.

You have to learn how to store and cook food properly.

We are on a limited income and double buy. And we have to keep a shopping list going on the "must have versus the nice to have". Learning to rotate your foods and other items is essential.

It is nice to not run out of cooking oil, vinegar, household paper or cleaning products.

Now that I am post menopause I donated my womanly supplies to the local shelter. I got a wee bit over zealous in that department lots of luck.

I do have a "charity" box of baby gear and it has come in handy when I have been invited to baby showers for co-workers.

Finding locally sourced supplies can be a good thing.

May the OP find the foods he/she is in need of.

One LDS woman has recently come out with a book titled The Time is Now, and it has gotten a lot of LDS people in a tizzy. I thought it was an interesting book and got me prepping better than I was before. But it's just one woman's near death experience, not anything from the LDS church itself. The church actually came out with a statement that said the end is not near nor does anyone including the church leaders know one way or another when the end is and that everyone should continue on with their lives but to continue following the prophets' advice of having food storage and being ready for anything. Heck my family lived off our food storage during the two months I had trouble finding a job. It's not just for the apocalypse.

The real issue is the govt.
There are several issues cresting this problem

1 most church farms are in California/ Midwest both regions hit hard by drought.

Secondly the govt has classified all canneris as food manufacturers even if your canning your own stuff and mandating they have a usa food inspector as such and the cost prohibitive nature of having a usa inspector at all canneris the church has decided that only the central facility in Utah will Cann goods and ship them to canneris for sale.

Other issue is demand is up 500% not just with lds but across the board with other companies as well many of the purchasers are govt agencies from what I have been told.

As for doomsday predictions I have not heard anything on it.

Wouldn't believe everything you hear.
Remember, every Bishop's storehouse is somewhat independent. I talk regularly to several people in the NW, and have heard no organized end of the world scenario. Like any group, there are individuals with their own ideas and agendas.

Also, it's the start of winter, when LOTS of us tend to stock up....

My clan of hellions had to do that too, lost my job then was diagnosed with MS all within 3 months, we used up most of our preps in the last 9 mths but we sure as heck was glad to have it, now comes the slow but steady process of replacing what we consumed. on a fixed income it will take time but its worth it. (I dont think I will ever be able to choke down another bowl of maccorini noodles again though)

Go to your local LDS cannery and you'll find no shortage at all.
I very recently went to mine and found they were well stocked and have not had a rush in buying.

I had to get some #10 cans from the place that's a 16 mile drive from here last week. There were 2 people being helped ahead of me and I got taken care of fairly fast. It looked like the shelves were full.

I asked one of the missionaries there whether they'd had a big rush due to that book some woman wrote about "the big one" hitting soon. He said that there was quite a rush on products during the previous 2 months (august and sept) but it had quieted down to normal now.

There was a big panic for Y2K and then a big push for returns of product right after. Whether it was LDS members or not, he couldn't say, but it shows that some people have their heads in the sand even when they prep.

So far I've only stored what I know I can cook or what is premade freeze dried for convenience. As far as cooking from scratch with beans, if you're referring to using things for bean powder or what not, then no I have never done anything with bean powder but would love to learn. Yes I can make baked beans or bean soup or what have you. But great advice all together.

The closest cannery to me is a solid 4 hour drive. So I find it tough to justify the drive and likely an overnight stay some where to go can my own things. I'm not sure as the cost savings would be enough to offset that or not for how much of what I care to purchase. For me it's mainly the pastas, oats, and potatoe flakes for now. Until I'm better situated to buy in bulk and bag it myself in mylar.

I had heard of the new government regs regarding the USDA inspectors and what not. Seems like a direct jab at large scale cannery's and food storage places such as the LDS cannery's.

my problem is I have too many canned goods....I realize you can use cans well past their exp dates but still, I don't want to have them around too many years past that date....

I've got the basics though...

FYI…I ordered apple slices, macaroni, spaghetti bites, onions, white beans, and potato flakes on September 10th. ALL of the items were on back order. I received the apple slices, macaroni, spaghetti bites, and onions on October 3rd. The white beans and potato flakes are STILL on back order.

:(
Good to know. Perhaps I will source things elsewhere for the time being.
