Whenever they build a new and modern highway... Hijacked for a price. But who wants to sell?Where is it that land farms and houses are being hijacked by the government?
Well, actually, that begs an interesting question. When the .gov wants to open up new territory, what do they do? They build a road through it. Used to be a railroad.location, location, location. most bol is far enough off the beaten path that "imminent domain" is highly unlikely, to say the least.
I can relate, and say this. We tackled unimproved land and improved too much of it. We should have left as much as possible just native. Now we have major work maintaining what we improved, including a 1/4 acre lawn just for starters.By all means, buy land. Just remember, the more you own, the more it owns you.

I'm sorely tempted to hit about 1/2 of it with Roundup, whack off the sprinkler system lines and let it go back to nature. We are surrounded by woods and I should have left most of it.

Good ideas! Any trees I plant have to already be big enough, or have to be deer fenced or they get killed the first year. Those danged deer will eat young limbs right back to the trunk not to mention eating all the leaves off.Maybe you could plant some cherry trees or berry bushes that would take advantage of the water system, and let it go back wild to a degree.
I love wild plums. They make the best jelly. They're almost impenetrable to people. They also attract quail and wildlife.

We do have some fruit trees. One problem is that we are in major orchard country and there is already a pest problem here which the orchardists religiously spray for. If I don't, the fruit or even trees die, or the fruit is full of worms or something.
I do have a 100 year old apple tree which is dying from something. This year only one side has fruit. I'm going to save seeds this year, winter them over properly and clone that tree since it is an heirloom. 100 years ago they mined for gold and started logging here, and there are remnants of it including that tree and an old road cut into the hillside.
That heirloom apple tree can be seen in my pic above, just above and overhanging the irrigation ditch just to the left of the foot bridge, about center bottom. The apples remind me of Fuji apples, but I have no idea what they are. They are sure good. The tree is small kind of like today's dwarfs. I'd guess it's only 15' tall.
Most of the native plants around here aren't used to and don't do well with irrigation so I have to go one way or the other. Maybe some of each?
