Do you know what the knife laws are in your state or city. I know that some cities have laws over and above what the law for the state they are in, and sometimes it can be confusing. Who has the most restrictive laws, and how do you deal with them?

Some summaries of state knife laws:

Or do further Google searches by specific city or county.

Yeah, those laws are all over the place with little uniformity.

My daily carry is fine all over MO and KS -- except the small little
municipality where my in-laws live. Always got to remember to swap
out to a smaller knife because my regular one is 1/4" over the limit.

European Laws

European laws (for those who are interested) vary widely. For example, in England, esp London, knives are heavily restricted, but in Central European Countries Czech Republic and Slovak Republic, Poland and so on, knife laws are quite lax.

Virtually any knife is allowed. I have never seen an ownership restriction for knives. I think this is because there is such a large hunting community in this area. However, EDC laws exist, but are lax too.

Any folding knife can be carried, but if used in a defensive situation, a knife with a blade length longer than the palm of your hand is considered an offensive weapon. This is the law in Cz and SK.

In Hungary, I have read that the law is that any blade larger than 3 inches is illegal, but I have seen larger blades sold. I posted similar info on Bladeforums about this...

Where I live, consealed carry of anything that can cause "great bodily harm" is considered illegal, unless on your property or in your vehicle. But if its open carry then all is good. No blade length restrictions.

New York is a confusing mess. Ill start with everything besides NYC. There is no legal limit written anywhere. But apperantly on some cases its been brought up that knives over 4 inches are not allowed to be carried in public places. Switchblades are of course illegal. Laws say much stuff about gravity knives being not allowed, but of course the definition of the gravity knife can and will be debatable by the law. My benchmade griptillian is a manual opening knife, but if I disengage the lock, I can flip it open and closed without touching the blade, so...some may consider it a gravity knife since gravity is opening the blade. In the knife world though gravity knives are mostly butterfly knives, which are illegal in most areas just like switchblades. The other thing, which is contradicting conceled carrying laws is no knife should be visable to the public.

In NYC its a whole new ballgame. The new DA went nuts and raided every place that sold knives and took away all knives that locked, whether they had a thumb stud, a nail knick, didnt matter, out they went and they were all considered illegal. Just about the only thing left might of been some swiss army knives. Idk what has changed since then, but for NYC its pretty much, if your knife locks open, its illegal. Im rarely in the city and when I do go I just bring my SAK spartan. Everywhere else I carry whatever. I do not own any switchblades, automatic knives or butterfly knives so Im not really worried about the laws. I also dont carry fixed blades so not worried about size either, as all mine are under fpur inches anyway. I dont flash my knives in public or involve myself in activities that would warrant accusation that my edcs are dangerous weapons. Btw any carry of a blade with the intention of using it as a weapon even for defensive purposes is illegal...at least in NY. Im also a volunteer firefighter/first responder/emt, and knives are very helpful in my dutys in many ways. So I still carry my locking blades and griptilian.

www.kniferights.org has been working hard on New York
Yup yup, they are amazing. It is nothing short of criminal what the DA did as far as forcing establishments to pay $200,000 or they would face criminal charges, ontop of having their stock of knives stripped from their stores. Strangely, some stores were allowed to keep and sell some knives that were considered illegal, so it sounds like the DA wants some of them to make it to the street.

This is a good read whether your from new york or not.
