Just bought this Ka Bar, Model 1279, 14" Machete. Have'nt had it out in the Woods with me yet. Anyone else here own one, and have any comments, good or bad? I don't contribute much the the Knives Section, infact this is likely my first new Thread in this Forum. Just lookin' for some conversation about my newest Purchase.
Looks like it will handle the light Duties I bought it for.

I love the handles on that series of knives and a machete made of 1085 sounds good to me, it's also about .168 thick i think which isn't bad. It should make short work of anything you want to chop or cut with it.
How much did you pay for it?

I took it out and whacked through a couple(2) 3/4" Beech Saplings with it. Single downward Stroke while holding the Tree at a slight bend. Went through them like Cheese. I'll be taking it Camping when the weather permits.
It's kinda' bulky to wear on my Belt, so I will likely affix it to the outside of my Pack.
I got burned on the Price. Baught it at my local Archery Shop, $71.00.
Got home and found it online for as little as $47.
Oh well. It was one of those impulse buys. I was buying a bunch of BP and then glanced over and noticed it in the Ka-Bar Display whispering my name.
I like it I guess. I will likely stick to ordering online in the future.:thumb:

$47 online but how much shipping? Shipping generaly runs $15-20 up here so you may not have been as burned as you think. I prefer a shorter, slightly thicker blade but I know some people have even used the crappy Cold Steel Khukri machete to baton with and those are thinner than the .167 of the Kabar.
My favorite from Kabar's machete family is the Khukri, chops like mad and seems to hold an edge amazingly well for the steel (1085 is basicaly the same thing as SK5 so realy not that bad considering my Tramontina is 1075 and it holds a decent edge as well for a $20 blade).

Shipping for a lb or so? Free or practically. And since it's under a $100 it also is insured for free via ups last time I checked. The internet also allows for avoiding local taxes. That one really galls the crooks in govt who think they need to middleman everything to death.

There are many sites that simply becuse of the economy are advertising just that for many things. Don't expect free shipping if it has bulk or weight. Besides it depends on the shipper and not on what it says on a website's webpage.
