So, the gasket to my Optimus liquid fuel canister ruptured, leaked a small amount of (but extremely stinky) kerosene inside my backpack, on my tent, and on my favorite outdoor clothes. Not really in the mood for this to happen again. Which brings up two questions:

1. Do you really have to use the lids on liquid fuel bottles? The gasket to my fuel pump looks much better... can the fuel pump not be stored non-stop in a full fuel canister? Will the fuel pump ever leak like out of the hose or anything? Will this damage the pump?

2. I picked up a JetBoil system for the time being. I'll probably end up liking it better for backpacking anyway at least for solo trips. Is there any tips or tricks I should know to minimize any learning period?

Do not ignite the flame with the cup on the burner. It should be obvious, but I've seen so many people (on Youtube) almost burn their hands off due to the explosion of flame that vents out the burner's sides because they affixed the cup to the stove before igniting.

Pick up the larger 2L cooking pan. It works great.

I had a problem with my jet boil, the gauze on the burner failed through metal fatigue caused by thermal expansion and contraction during normal usage, and fell into the gas well, the next time I ignited it, the metal pieces directed the gas through the vent below the burner cup, where it ignited and set fire to the plastic surround. This is a potentially hazardous fault and you should check regularly that it has not happened on your jet boil unit.

Actually this is exactly what the salesperson said to do! Guess I'll think twice about that. However, I have heard of people having problems like this if the piezo ignitor fails and they have to ignite it with a lighter.

For the Jetboil, when I attach the fuel and start it up, I make sure the container will come right off in order to separate them quickly.

Jetboil Personal Cook Set is for heating/boiling water only. Do not add anything until you shut it off and separate it. If you knock it over or it has some other problem you will be out your food, drink or mix.

The fuel cannisters I use are from Snowpeak and have a little platic protector that prevent damage to the valve.

You should tell the salesperson to read the owner's manual.

If you haven't gotten it already, the legs for the base and pot grate kit are a solid investment which will make your stove more stable and more versatile.
