Hey Leif, I saw the same videos and bought a waterstone and a saguro to go with it. Unfortunately, I have not used it as yet. Hope to get a chance to over the holiday. I bought the 1000 / 6000 combo and I look forward to trying it. Best of luck and I would like to hear your impressions....

These are basically the same thing as an Arkansas stone. (I would not be the least bit surprised if they actually were.) They have the same pro's and con's of any whetstone.

No the grit is much finer. I use an 8,000 grit to sharpen my razor. An Arkansas stone is way too crude for that.
Thank you for pointing out the difference. :thumb: I was not aware of the Japanese or Belgian types of waterstone and the differences between them and Arkansas stones: porous vs nonporous, slurry/mud vs stone face.

The reviews of King brand stones seem to universally say these are good stones but wear rather fast.

I did some googling. Here are some of the better links (IMHO) from my click trail. I hope they help.

Much of the waterstone vs Arkansas stone commentary I could find seemed to be of the "if it's not Scottish its crap" kind.

but I will just shut up now until I get the money, time, and space to get a waterstone, try it out, and compare it to my Arkansas stones.
