I think wire saws are a waste of time. I saw a 12 bow saw that is also compatible with hacksaw blades for $10. Pretty handy and very common man priced and replaceable blades is a winner in my book.
This saw is what I have carried for about 14 years now. Weighs nothing, and
you can chuck in a hacksaw blade for bone. A wire saw is an Altoids can
backup. As I said, I use stainless steel bass guitar strings for this, about
a .080. They do work, and because they are composed of multiple windings
and they aren't affected by overheating. Still never my first choice, though.
