"The DNR says since 1995, there have been 25 confirmed mountain lions in the state. Of those, five were shot and killed and two were hit by cars."

This is at least the second confirmed one in urban Des Moines since 2010, the first was shot and killed by police in 2012.

But hey, it's ok because "mountain lions are native to Iowa but were wiped out in the 1880s as farmers feared the predators would kill livestock."

They have been confirmed, albeit unofficially, since 2001 when a male was killed by a car in Harlan at the corner of the high school campus. The female was seen in the area over a period of several months inside the town and the surrounding area until finally departing.

The male is stuffed and in the Nisha museum south of Harlan.
