I have a tendancy to need a knife, screwdriver and pliers at the same time. I carry a 5" Visegrip, a 4-way screw driver from Ace Hardware and Shrade Stockman jack knife. If I leave any one of them at home I feel naked. I also carry a single AAA cell Maglite, 4" flatbar modified to go on a keychain, folding scissor and a P-38.
Where were you going with this thread? Leatherman is the ultimate multi-tool! but of course it will not always be able to do everything you need it too.
I too carry the small AAA maglite, but I would agree with the hog in that a really good multitool like a Leatherman is almost indispensable these days. They perform a lot of tasks and can save you in a pinch. Stay away from the Chinese knock offs. The metal is crap.
I agree, noone should be without a good multi-tool with them at all times. Everyone has their own opinions, and I love my Gerber. I have put it through an insane amount of torment and it still works, although the knife blade is snapped off (my fault, not it's). As far as an EDC flashlight, Fenix P3D is my light of choice.
