How much emergency $$$ on hand to be safe?

If you look around on the internet, you will find a lot of different advice on how much cash to have on hand for emergencies. Here are a few that I found:

Plan No. 1 (easiest to remember): 100 silver (pre-1965) dimes and 100 one-dollar bills kept at home.

Plan No. 2: 20 one-dollar bills; 20 five-dollar bills; 10 ten-dollar bills; and 10 20-dollar bills (for a total of $420). Additional rolls of change (quarters, dimes, and nickels) to bring the total up to $500.

Plan No. 3: $50 in one-dollar bills kept inside whatever vehicle you usually drive. At home: $1,000 in 20-dollar bills; $200 in one-dollar bills; and $50 in rolled quarters (not silver). Also, $150 to $300 face value in U.S. silver coins. ($1,300, not including the spot price value of the silver coins).

One size does not fit all with this decision. You will probably end up doing a combination of various choices for emergency cash. I just posted these to give you a place to start your thinking.

For me...

A fire proof hidden lock box but easliy accesilble for you containing:

Atleast a $1000 in cash broken into 100's, 50's 20's 10's 5's 1's....

Several rolls of quarters, dimes, nickles, pennies,

Some "junk silver" and silver coins.

A couple credit cards and some stamps maybe of help if their still of value.

Some "junk" jewelry may be of value also.

.22 rounds up could be barter too...

JMHO.

Re the larger denomination bills (100's and 50's)......I see a lot of stores here which won't accept these large bills any more. That might possibly be a factor in an emergency situation, too.

$500 in pocket, Five months salary in cash savings, Five years salary in retirement IRA, 5 days food in your car, Five firearms in the safe, 500 rounds ammo for each gun, Five gallon big berkey, A sleeping bag that will keep you warm to Five degrees farenheit...

I like it. Easy to remember and covers most of the bases.

I have more than 5 days worth of supplies kept in my car, though. You just never know what will happen. Might have to scramble, fast, to leave home, and a bad situation might easily result in a need for more than 5 days worth of food, etc. on the road.
