I recently got my permits and am in the process of completing the following by the end of the month:

Glock 23 and a 9mm conversion barrel (2 glock 19 mags)
Mos Nag rifle

1000 rounds for the G23
500 rounds of 9mm
440 rounds for the Mos Nag

Between 2 ammo cans I have 19 boxes of the .40 stored.. a couple 9mm.. and two mags loaded so far in the safe (I'll probably increase it mainly to stretch out the new mag springs).

I think I will be ok (restocking what I use at the range of course), but I'm curious what you think is a good # of rounds to have on you.. I know some people will say "as many as you can get" but I like to manage my spending on ammo + food preps.

my views on stocking ammo are the same a storing food. ill be done when there is none left to buy. food is self explanatory. i dont plan on being involved in any firefights, but i believe in the event of tshtf, ammo might be very valuable as a barter item to those that sat around and made fun of the crazy survivalist guy all those years. (actually, imho, this theory applies to pretty much any preps)

You have the right idea, look at the overall plan. You live in NJ. Some parts are rural, others are quite a bit different. In an area like that, mobility is a big consideration. I used to live in long island. The majority of my funds set aside for topics like these was transportation off the island. You may want to factor this.

Most folks agree on here, we probably buy more than we may need. But, since there is no extact number on what you need, it comes down to a comfort thing.

I don't have an exact science to it. but I seem to have 5:3:2:1. 5 rounds of 22lr to 3 rounds primary centerfire rifle to 2 rounds shotgun to 1 rounds handgun cartridges. However, I lead cast and reload shotgun quite a bit. So my stock can be rather flexible down the road if needed.

My guess is 10% of folks in Jersey have a gun. 90% of them probably only have a few boxes for their hunting rifle or two. Your way ahead of the curve.

Focus on knowing how to use your firearms. Don't skimp out on quality practice.

Some of us who live in Kalifornia face our own mini-SHTF in that the PTB are desperately trying to pass bills restricting or taxing ammo purchases. If you like to shoot, you end up buying more to assure that you will always have a supply. I'm up to around 26,000 rds. I'm a little light on .308, but plenty of everything else.

For awhile I was concerned with how much is enough too. I would buy a few boxes of whatever caliber I thought I wanted to supplement each month. Then, as I learned more about different types of ammo I realized it isn't only how much you have, but what kind you have as well.

Now instead of just buying as much ball ammo as I can afford each trip, I may put back the 13 dollar 9mm box and spring for some more hollow points. Same for shotgun, sometimes I grab the box of 25 bird shot but other times for the same money I grab a 5-box of quality 00 buck or 5 slugs instead. Rifle ammo is even more confusing when you factor in range, match, or grain.

I guess what I'm saying is I believe a good ammo stock has different types of ammo as well as as much ammo you want/need for your scenario.

Cheers!

there will be no practicing after shtf. you won't dare risk the noise calling in your killers. i buy the occasional 5000 rd case of .22's, when my supply goes below 2000 rds, but that is just to save the trips to buy more. 9mm, and 223, a few hundred rds each, because I reload them, no need of a lot. If shtf, 22 better cover nearly all of your needs, because if it doesnt, you are doing too many things wrong to last very long. A very few shots and I will have lots more ammo, to fire a very few rounds and have lots more ammo, so no need to stockpile much of it.

lots of ball bearings for the slingshot...

Some gun stores have bulk round specials, for example $200 for 250 rounds of buckshot, etc. I guess I should stop buying individual boxes, but dammit, $200 seems like so much to spend!

So here you are a convicted felon who's barred from owning guns admitting on an open forum that you have ammo and are shooting. Plus you're basically saying that in a shtf situation you intend to kill other people and steal their weapons and ammo. I wonder how you PO would feel about this post?
