First, yes I did search this topic but didn't come up with the information I needed.

This is specific about ar15 ammo. Just wondering how much of this ammo should be stockpiled.

I would think since this ammo is light weight and can be used with high capacity magazines, so one would need the most of this ammo. lets face it most of us probably own a bunch of pmags, so this is the ammo you're going to fire the most of when needed.

I think a reasonable stock pile would be 2,000 rounds, I am not sure if 1,000 rounds will cut it.

What do you guys think about ar15 ammo, how much should you stockpile?

It's always funny when we Americans post these crazy ammo numbers. I remember some guy once wrote from I believe South Africa saying that all he is allowed to have is 50 rounds, when I said is 500 rounds enough for handguns.

Us Americans don't even feel comfortable with 1,000 rounds.

LOL.

It depends on what you are preparing for......

I don't have a number where I will stop. If I had to leave the house on foot anymore than 300rounds is crazy. In a vehicle 5k.

I think it is more important to stockpile the tens of thousands of rounds of ammo for price protection than the actual SHTF situation unless you are planning for the apocalypse and all modern technology disappearing long term.

I'd say 1k of your main defensive ammo would be more than enough for initial zeroing/function check and routine zeroing plus your "load out."

That's the big question, if I knew prices would not get cheaper I would feel less bad about buying more.

Don't you think we have not yet bottomed out on the ammo prices yet?

Do you shoot a lot just for fun and practice ? That can be a big factor in quantity. My children and I can burn trough 1k rounds in a weekend of fun

Depends on how you think the government or the media will affect the ammunition supply in the future. Recently we experienced a large panic buy of ammunition due in part to Obamas re-election and the school shootings in CT.

Ammunition became difficult to find and the prices went into the stratosphere. All it takes to recreate the same panic, or worse, is that the liberals generate another push to throttle firearm, ammunition, magazine sales or a significant mass shooting at another gun free zone.

Obamas agenda is to turn the USA into a socialist / communist utopia. He cannot do that unless he disarms the people. He has not given up on that endeavor, we will see Obama and the anti gun zealots launch another full court press as soon as they feel that the time is right.

So, stock up on as much ammo, magazines and firearms as you feel will be enough to weather the storms that are sure to come. Replacing ammunition used up in practice may become very difficult.

Under normal circumstances I like to keep at least 1K of every caliber I have with the exception of .22lr where I keep about 3-5k. For price protection probably 3-5k would be more than enough..Lets face it if you have to leave you are not going to be able to carry more than 300-500 rds (max) and if you are staying put and need to put more than 1k rds down range it means you are facing a very large # of bad guys and your time is most likely up :(

Ha that's funny, I just got done reloading about 100 rounds of SS109 62 gr. 5.56. So far I have about 4500 rounds of 5.56. I stockpile ammo, but when I do shoot for practice I usually pick up some wolf ammo and plink with that. I have been reading that the pentagon is going to destroy about 1 billion dollars worth of ammo, man I wish I can get my hands on some of that. Such a waste.

the Vietnamese merchants ran low on ammo, food and water fighting off the Central LA rioting hoard .... afterward they built reinforced rooftop bunkers and stocked enough supplies to re-take Saigon ....

what's enough? .... depends on your overall plans .... bugging in? .... bugging out of the city post SHTF? ..... slinking around city taking pot shots?

I'm having withdrawals.. I haven't bought ammo in like 16 hours...

The answer to the OP's question; 3 K to 5 K . That'd be my suggested starting point. I know a lot that would be happy with 1K...( for 5.56 )

A military loadout would be 7 (30 ) round magazines. A 420 round ammo can is enough for two people..
