Have one I picked up about 2 years ago but other than cleaning it haven't shot mine. Does seem though like I don't see the 7.62x54R very often anymore, especially the battle packs and spam cans that used to seem to be everywhere.

Would also be nice to see a load of SKS hit the market. Wish I'd have gotten one or 6 of those 20 years ago... but I thought heck they're cheap and everywhere, i'll get one some day. Now the Mosin's seem to be going the same way and when I do see them the Mosin's seem to be more like in the $150-200 range.

What are others seeing?

They will become collectors. I say this because there are a lot of people who miss them dearly, despite the fact that they're NOT GOOD RIFLES. Their virtue (singular) was price.

That virtue is gone and people still want them.

I don't get it. Sentimental value? Its not a good deal on a rifle anymore. There are better guns for cheaper that are made in the U.S for a lower price that shoot better ammo that is more available.

There are some valid points - for me, price was definitely one of the factors, but I still like mine as collectible WWII value. They're just pretty cool to see how they were built, under what circumstances, etc. I have a self-made P/U sniper as well as a basic 91/30, both of which shoot very well. Are there "better" rifles these days? Yes, but no one ever came up to my bench while shooting and said "WHOA, cool (Ruger American base model)! Can I shoot it?" Because the PU does draw some heads.

Plus, people say that it's "not a good rifle"... they had no problem making short work of Germans for a long time... :). It may be (er...was) a cheap, quickly made rifle, but they are quite reliable and 7.62x54r is definitely NO slouch of a cartridge .

"Don't worry - they only have a Mosin Nagant to defend themselves" is a bold statement still to this day IMO.

What I'd like to do is -- put you about 200 yrds. down range with a target pinned to your chest -- I'll bet by the time I walk the 200 yards back to you -- you'll change your mind :D:

Or will you say -- "I'd prefer a 5.56 hole please" with your dying breath ?

Ad a while back.....$199.99
http://www.centerfiresystems.com/RU...il&utm_term=0_a17d16ad3c-5945755da5-129164533

Used to hate them myself....read so many pages of all the stuff you need to do to make it shoot,..... change to modern stock, do a trigger job, bolt work scout scope....etc.
Then when you get done....agonize over the fact that they still work the best when you shoot them as if you hate them.

I have grown to love and enjoy a simple machine that works the same today as it did 100+ years ago.....

And yes, they look like they were hacked out of a rail road rail, with an axe,... beat into shape with a rock.,...then smoothed out on than same rock....by Babushkas in a hut in Siberia.
Ammo buried in Stalingrad in 1945 can be dug up and shoots just fine.
What's not to love?....

Not going to see $89 buck Nagant's any time soon.....

I think the sweet spot for milsurp is over period.
Unless we get over the legal and other issues that would keep military M4s and M16s off the civilian market, we have no more large supplies of milsurp rifles waiting for us.

Those issues could be overcome in a couple of ways, though, so who knows.

I beg to differ. The 91-30 is very accurate. The one I got about 10+ years ago with sniper bent bolt and post-WW II Soviet scope is dead on after I replaced the Soviet scope with a modern U.S. made one.

I don't have the patience for sniper long distance shooting (I prefer bang, bang with my AKs lol). But, my son loves that rifle. I bought it for him when he was in his early/mid-teens and he would spent hours shooting at long distance targets in the field and checking his groupings with his spotter scope. He actually did very well with the Russian scope. I could never figure out how the Red Army snipers killed so many Nazis using that scope.

Just the opposite of our two 91-30s are the two M44s. The M44s are not that accurate. However, if I'm attacked and miss I can skewer my assailant with the fold out spike bayonet!!! lol

The 91/30 can be accurate if the barrel is in good shape and the sights are in good shape or it has a scope. Why wouldn't it be accurate? It's a long barrel shooting a .308-class spitzer bullet at good velocity.

The gun is also reliable and simple to maintain.

Beyond that, it's fair to say it uses some cheap components and it's made cheaply, but not in ways that affect reliability or accuracy ... so in that sense, it makes no difference. Just like a competitive handgun shooter with a Glock 19 can compete with a guy with a Kimber 1911 even though nobody would probably say they Glock is as nice as the Kimber.

... The M44 is a different beast and is the least accurate rifle I have ever owned.

I think it humorous that every time Nagant's are being discussed, there as to be some one come along to tell every one what a POS they are.....

Everyone else just smiles, nods their heads....and buy 3 more...

Not for everyone....

Half a decade ago, when they were $100 and the panic buying drove the price of a basic AR into the $1,000 range, they were a great buy. You could literally get 10 Mosins for the price of one AR.

Now, however, with basic ARs going for $400, and Mosins going for $300, you can get 4 Mosins for the price of 3 brand spanking new ARs. That's a no-brainer in favor of the AR.
