I bought my Saiga primarily for home defense. I was

thinking of tricking it out a little with a folding stock and

pistol grip. I'm not sure if I really want to put a scope on

it. I do want something with a decent scope and

caliber to hunt with. I'm not sure this would be a good

dual purpose gun. Or if I should just get a used 30-30

Marlin the local gun shop has for $275 with a scope. Or

spend a few more bucks on a .270 ,30-06,or 308.

Thanks in advance for any input.

7.62x39 is the same power factor as a 30-30. Thick cover should work just fine. If you are hunting more open areas(beanfields, powerline cuts, etc) go with a good bolt action.

I'll be the first to say that there is always a good excuse for buying another gun. However, the 7.62x39 with soft points would be good on deer. If you can put 10 out of 10 on a 10" plate at 100 yds I'd use it. If not.......

a 22lr will kill a dear
So will a Ford F150 but neither would be a choice for deer hunting.

I had an AK sporter back before the Saiga came around. It was the same gun just called an AK sporter. The biggest draw back for me was getting a good scope mount. Top cover mounts are poor at best for mounting a scope. As for the 7.62x39 caliber on deer it works just fine out to 150 yards. I have taken deer with an SKS no problem.
