So, most of us pay taxes and vote, but in what other ways do you serve your community? I'm thinking this is important because, whether by choice or by circumstances, we all will wind up in some kind of a community post SHTF. Having provided some kind of selfless service may provide dividends if the SHTF, such as by have additional social contacts, having built up some good will, or just by having a better sense of who your neighbors are.

I'm on the boad of directors of a local non-profit, but am not particularly active, at the local level, in any other way. What are other people doing?

I do small things for neighbors like helping to move heavy objects. I spend all day at work helping people. The problem is the amount of free time available to me. With the little I have I just don't have the energy to get involved in much.

When I get some free time I may paper the local chinamart with funfacts.:D:

All I can say is "horse****"!! I serve my country by paying my own way through life. I have 5 children who will end up paying taxes for those who refuse to get off thier asses and do for themselves. I pay my own way. I am not a drag on society. I refuse to abort my future, and therefore I work toward the future insted of working against it. And if any liberal or hippie should have a problem with that Id be more than willing to meat them and set them straight PERSONALLY about who is doing what for thier country and who is being a drag on thier country.

It is not a matter of what you are doing to help your country but more of a matter of ARE YOU DRAGGING YOUR COUNTRY DOWN.?!?!

Glad your not a drag on society but occupying space and paying taxes wasn't the question.

Are you active in your community? Charities? Church groups? PTA? Scout leader?
Do you do anything beyond working and paying taxes?

Don't feel bad or get angry if you don't, it was just a question.

Its ok. I saw what you posted and honestly, Why do you think that other people are responsible from someones stupid mistakes? Why should responsible america be forced to pay for irresponsible america?

It doesnt make much sence to me. I work, I pay taxes, I support my family. What makes me wrong in expecting everyone else to do the same thing?

Yes I am active; however, Charity begins in the home. Quit making excuses for people and start expecting them to pull thier own weight and you will be on the road to a free society, justify their mistakes and you will find yourself supporting them. Its a simple choice to me.

Yep I removed the content prior to the eruption of stupidity that is sure to ensue. If anyone is really interested send me a pm and I will give you all details about what and how I help people of the community.

EDIT: play nice people :)
I may need a PM if you really don't think what you do to help your community is worth posting or that it will invite trolls.

Now I'm curious what this could be. Sounds like something that might make a good example to others.

There is absolutely nothing in any of my posts that could possibly lead you to believe this!

I happen to agree with what you said here 100% but that is not at all what this thread is discussing.

Observation: there is a level of anger on this forum that is truly toxic--it seems to inhibit otherwise normal people from having a simple discussion. Thanks to everyone who is responding in the spirit of the original post.

Here is the thing hippie, our country has gotten to the point that we can no longer afford the B.S. of supporting anyone other than ourselves. (You are on a survivalist forum so you must at least admit that there comes a time where this happens) As much as it is a noble idea that our country should support ALL PEOPLE, we have come to find out that IT IS a REALITY that that is an impossibility. Sure it would be nice to be able to eliminate poverty but that is just a dream: there will always be the haves and have nots. there really is no way around it.

The Anger comes from doing everything that one is supposed to do in order to get ahead and still being behind AND THEN doing the research and finding out that you are paying around 50% of you income to people that sit on thier asses. (Be they miscreants or old farts or criples ETC.)

The Liberal mindset has contributed in the fall of the USA. (Even if all you can conceed is that over 25 million future tax payers have been aborted in the last 40 years) The idea of "if it feels good do it" was a hippie thing, and a lot of the population will hate hippies for it.

Sorry but its an honest opinion.

We volunteer to go grocery shopping for a shut-in (immobile) lady who is a member of our Church. There are 4 of us that divide up the month & visit one week, help her tidy up, fix a few meals to last that week. Food drives, are really big here. A lot of kids go hungry because parents would rather throw money away in a casino.

In our actual neighborhood where we live- we have very little to do. Master planned communities charge a home owners association fee that covers beautification and upkeep. Our sons are in the Honor Society, they are required to do community service throughout the year so they volunteer for a ministry called Calvary Outreach that makes hot food in the afternoons for the homeless. Eventhough it's a requirement....they always come back wanting to hurry up and do it again. It's never "work or obligation" to them. So it teaches them humility and appreciation.

I look at my community and have to say I've served them by not quietly knocking them off one by one.

I have one neighbor next to me that is OK, they are retired from Ohio. We speak every time we see each other if only to say hi and talk about the weather. They were very concerned about my wife and still ask if there is anything they can help with or if we need them just let them know.

ALL the others are the kind that play music loudly till 3 or 4 in the AM (I have kids that are trying to sleep). They have animals loose and running around. They all seem to unemployed and constant flow of high speed traffic down our street. Their kids go to school 2 out of every 3 days. They are from NYC have that loud obnoxious attitude. They have moved to a small quiet town and say they now run this sh!t here.

I have no doubt that when TSHTF they will be the first zombies at my door for handouts.

As far as I'm concerned they should feel humbled by the fact I have let my "hood" turn into this. If law and order should ever break down, things here may change back quickly to small quite town that is was.

Well, you and I are coming at things from a very different perspective--that's all I can say. You might be right about what "a lot" of the population think, but I hope not.

By doing nothing, and prepping to save our own asses when crunch time arrives. None of them are worth my time or sweat. Playing "goody-two-shoes" isn't in my nature. Never was. My neighbors barely know me, let alone ask for favors.

Every one who does know me, seem to agree, they say I remind them of a prowling wolf. I disagree. I like to think I am more of an opportunist or scrounger. A chipmunk! A little tiny ground squirrel whose sole daily purpose is to gather, save, store everything it will need to survive a winter. The ultimate prepper. Wolves aren't preppers, they are predators. I am no predator. That I can say for sure. I am a scrounging gatherer.

survivalist. Not a Canis Lupis. I'm a Tamias Striatus... and I don't do civil activities.

My motto has been and still is; Out of sight, Out of mind!

Never volunteer. He who sticks his head out, is the first to have it chopped off.
A far as society is concerned, Let them eat asscake!
