If you think you’ve been seeing more people sleep on city streets, statistics back up the perception. The homeless population living on New York City streets has gone up 50 percent in the past year, according to city statistics reported by the HellsKitchenLife.com blog.

The New York City Department of Homeless Services conducts a yearly survey of the streets of the city to count the number of homeless who are not in shelters. The HOPE survey was conducted in January 2010.

The number of homeless in the borough of Manhattan was up 47 percent in the past year, according to the count. The 2010 count had 1,145 people living in the streets. That is up 368 from 2009.

We have one that has been living down the block from me - very educated person in a bad position.
Most of these new homeless are not like the mentally ill homeless of the past.
And due to the high price of real-estate a lot of the shelters are gone - turned into luxury condo's for the urban pioneers that are coming to NYC.

This is what people fail to understand about our present government. The policies of our present socialist-in-chief leads to more homeless people and more unemployed people. Given time, these policies will eventually lead to more disease and more sick people. There is a very good possibility that these policies could ultimately lead to a pandemic which could kill off millions and millions of people like the Spanish Flu of 1918 did.

This occupier of the White House and his pals in the Congress are much more dangerous than most people give him credit for being.

Change "socialist" to "crony capitalist" and it'll all make sense.

spend time as one of the former and then say that...
The only homeless i fell sorry for are the the people with mental problems. Everyone else can get a job.

How is it 1.5million people can find somewhere to live by 1,500 cant? Its because they dont want to. They dont want to work. They're happy sleeping on the ground and living off the other 1.5million.

If you can't find a job in newyork then move! Most the homeless in my area smoke. If they can come up with 8 bucks to waste on cigarettes they can come up with 50 bucks for a bus ticket.

Try getting a job when you have no address. Better yet be homeless then you can have an opinion on homelessness. You can better yourself but its harder then I think you can comprehend. Even now im a small step away from being homeless again. Right now im technically a squatter who gives whatever I can to the people kind enough to let me live on their couch.

You can work at any of he day labor services without a address. Heck work at any sales location give a fake address. Whats going to happen? They dont send anything to your house. Give them the address to your homeless shelter. Buy a p.o box address for 5 bucks a month.
You're talking about a minimum wage job. As long as you can smile and dont smell you're in good shape.

As long as you have a phone number you can find a minimum wage job. Get a prepaid phone if you don't have a phone number.

After your first few week of work buy a van. Live out of your van. After the next week of work buy a gym membership. Workout then shower everyday.
Then save up and get an apartment.

Yes it will be hard to get out of the gutter they dug. Its a lot flippen easier not to get that low. If i ever got that low, i would have a van ready with insurance paid for a few years. I will never be homeless as long as people are still hiring for work.

Most the homeless in my area are in their 20's They dont want to work. Im sorry if it makes you mad. It might not be the same in your area by around me its this way.

The unemployment rate in the upper Midwest is still lower than any big city. Perhaps folks from New York would not consider the great plains states of North and South Dakota, Iowa, all the way south to Oklahoma, I don't know.

What I do know is that I moved 1800 miles to find a stable job during the last recession and if I were out of work again, I would do what ever it took to land a damn job.

Homelessness appears to be in direct corolation with Housing prices.

NYC housing cost High= High percentage of Homeless

California housing cost high=High percentage of Homeless

Oklahoma housing cost low= Low percentage of Homeless

There are many reasons for homelessness,But I think this is the reason why so many in NYC. Hey I never met a homeless Muslim. wonder why

I laugh at those figures. There are atleast 10,000 homeless people in Uptown Manhattan alone!!! trust me. i grew up there.:(
You havn't been here in a while -LOL - drunk Columbia college or NYU students passing out on the street don't count!!

NYU freshman just came on campus - 1st time in NYC for many of these kids - and we find a few passes out in the area almost every morning!!

Definitely agree with Sendkeys on this one.

Here's another idea.. Join the military, learn a skill, get out 4 years later with GI Bill to further your education, have money in your pocket, nice car and everything.

All you need is a clean record and be in a shape other than round or pear and you can get in. High school education helps.

I did it 30 years ago, had 2 years of college and couldn't find decent work. Joined the AF, did 20, now I get a check every month the rest of my life, medical care for my wife and I is $462.00 a YEAR, still use any commissary or BX at any military base, along with a ton of other benefits.

Join the Coast Guard if you don't want to fight Muslims..

I'm not a recruiter, I'm just someone who's tired of hearing "There's no jobs..."
The military is always hiring and they don't lay people off that do their jobs.

One more thing.. Get rid of all the statisticians.. They're making mountains out of molehills everywhere they turn. Then we'll get rid of the media as well. Then we'll call our troops back from all over the world and put them to work building one big ass wall around all of North America. Then we'll start doing like other countries.. "Ohh, you want your son back, send us one former president to negotiate his release.."
