Good evening. What is everyone using for home defense shotguns? Currently mine are the Mossberg 500 Persuader and the Winchester Defender both in 12 gauge capable of holding 8 2 3/4 inch shotshells each.

True but a Single 00 buckshot round has 8 .38 cal bb's in it, greatly increasing your chances of survival..
I have a Mossberg 500 loaded w/ No. 4 Bird. I figure that if I hit the intruder and he gets away, the police will be able locate him as being the guy w/ peritonitis in the hospital from all of shot in his gut.
Mine is a remington 870 express with a 20in barrel and #6 shot. With 00buck just gotta watch out for whats behind the bad guy, could be the kids room or a neighbors house.

This thread has all the usual fail clichés associated with shotgun myths

  • 00 buckshot pellets are .33 diameter; 000 buck is .36 dia.
  • Pumping a shotgun to scare the bad guys is a stupid idea.
  • Buckshot for bad guys; birdshot for birdies.
  • A Taurus Judge handgun for for home defense?
  • A shotgun will fill the room with a curtain of lead with one pull of the trigger
  • Alternating buckshot and birdshot in the magazine is a bad idea.
  • Buck n ball?

Looking at the recent Kel-Tec KSG shotgun I have to say that although having not used one it does appear to be a very good shotgun for home defense.

1. It is much shorter than a traditional shotgun and provides rails for a red dot, torch/laser and or pistol grip and so allows for greater maneuverability.

2. it has a greater barrel length, now whilst a shorter has the obvious advantages of a greater spread this may not be what you want and the greater barrel length allows for tighter groupings and greater velocities.

3. the ability to change between magazines between say lethal and none lethal ammunition is key, especially when family and friends are possibly in the line of fire.

4. the 14+1 capacity makes me drool.

5.It looks mean, now whilst of course I cannot think of any gun I would not be scared of being pointed at me there is to some degree a "scary" factor which may allow you to resolve the situation without firing a shot as the firearm is able to intimidate someone completely.

6.Did I mention the 14+1 :D

Mossberg 500 pistol grip with low noise, low recoil shells allows for quick follow up minimal wrist strain and a wide pattern out to about 25 yards. Have some slugs, 00, and #4 buck shot for more damage i.e. limb amputations if need be. But ripping off 5 slugs or 00 with a pistol grip better make sure your right hand is secure against your chest.

Winchester markets that overpriced rubbish to people who don't know any better and fall for the marketing tricks that make it seem like it's a great choiceâ–¬it's not. Period. It's simple Marketing 101. Firequest ammo is overpriced rubbish. The stuff Centurion sells is just as lousy.. Use PROVEN 00 and 000 buckshot loads by Remington, Winchester, Federal and Hornady, and keep slugs on a butt-cuff or side saddle.

The Taurus Judge is a joke

Shotgun as HOME DEFENSE/HOME INVASION medicine...what type of rounds to use...USE WHAT THE POLICE USE. Bird-shot is for birds. Kel-tek for home defense...dumb idea under any circumstances short of the SHTF, because it "LOOKS EVIL", and WHEN the jury sees it presented as evidence against you, YOU'RE SCREWED. Whatever you use be aware that IT WILL BE CONFISCATED during the investigation and odds are that you may NEVER recover it from the EVIDENCE LOCKER (even after an expensive Court-Battle and HIGH LEGAL FEES to do so)...CENTER OF MASS...Taurus Judge, and the choice of .45 Long Colt/410 bore for home defense, it is just like a motor-sailer boat which neither sails nor motors well. It's ok IF the threat is three feet in front of you, then you might as well just "pistol-whip" 'em with it. Keep it simple and USE WHAT THE LOCAL COPS USE... Remember, we do not have a JUSTICE SYSTEM...we have a POLITICALLY EXPEDIENT LEGAL SYSTEM. SAVVY?

well i can see that, as for firequest, i never used any of their stuff, i feel its way overpriced. the judge i dont feel would offer enough penetration with .410 buck beyond derringer distances, and a 36 ounce wheel gun is a helluva derringer. i do see a niche for it as far as snakes and other vermon. and i do have a shotgun loadin in my home, its just not my got to weapon when something goes bump. i like #4 buck for inside. 000 buck for if it goes to the yard. i been thinking about some one loading me some heavy clamp on lead fishing sinkers in some high brass loads, talk about fragmentation

Just don't use it to shoot bad guys unless in a shtf scenario..
1.) sinkers use pure lead
2.) Johnny Cochran-type lawyers would make you look worse than Jeffrey Dahmer
3.) patterns would be horrible
4.) penetration would be iffy

Win, Rem and Fed all use either nickel-plated, copper-plated or antimony-hardened lead buckshot pellets that increase penetration and typically have overall better pattern ability. Federal's Flite-Control wad used in their "Tactical" loads produced the tightest patterns ever available to shotgun users. The big ammo companies make the best defensive shotgun ammo available for Joe Homeowner, G.I. Joe and John Law. They spend the most on research and developement (..and marketing, too)

IMO, Federal Tactical reduced recoil 00 and 000 buck is the best available defensive shotgun load for any price.

No doubt it would be a very bad day for the bad guy to get hit with BnB or birdshot, but the intention a shotgun is being used for is to halt or stop the immediate deadly threat. Why not use a load that is PROVEN (slugs, 00 and 000 buck). You choose ammunition based on a worst-case scenario, not the best. You are, of course, free to choose any ammo you want, but there are sound reasons for why some ammo types are recommended over others.

If you knew that there is a person in a room behind the bad guy and you're only separated by drywall, would you really risk taking a shot and rely solely on the bullet to not hurt or kill someone in case of a miss? Number 1 and 4 buck is a viable option for overpenetration concerns

when i hear of people loading up #7's for HD i want to beat my skull against a brick wall, ''but over penetration" well u dont have to worry about over penetration when the load u chose doesnt penetrate the BG enough to take him down. WHERE IN THE HELL DID THIS BIRD SHOT FOR HD COME ABOUT??
WHY TAKE THE MOST POWERFULL NON NFA WEAPON AND LOAD IT WITH THE WEAKEST **** U CAN FIND?? #7's will work at point blank, they will even blow limbs off, but we are talking 7 yards here

I'm old school. Ithaca Model 37 Featherweight DS Police Special, made around late 60's or so. 12 ga, cylinder bore, 18" barrel, rifle sights. Wood and steel.
She's kept loaded with four OO buck rounds in the magazine, three more plus two slug rounds in an elastic butt cuff.
At night that leans up in the bedroom corner, on the nightstand is a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt, with CorBon +P JHP's.
What's a Glock?

A good rule of thumb is to use the same ammunition as your local P.D. does.
Fortunately, my local PD uses W-W Ranger T and R-P Golden Saber handgun ammo, and recently switched from shotguns to AR-15s..
For average Joe Homeowner, a pump-action Mossberg 500, Rem 870, Ithaca 37 or Winchester 1300 stoked with buckshot fills the niché perfectly.

Like Clint Smith said in the video i posted on page 2:
"you don't need a $1000 shotgun, i need to know how to run the gun i've got"

Im with the Mossberg 500 loaded with buckshot. Im surprised at all this emphasis people put on rounding corners, Unless there are other people (family etc) in the house in between you and the intruder who you need to defend, you are generally best to get into a good defensive position with plenty of cover (walls/shelving etc) and wait for the intruder to come to you. That way you are well covered and will have the element of surprise.

i agree but u cant plan nor train for every task that is to come, and i do have plenty of family in my home, that is why my shotty is in my lil 17 year old sis's room, i have no confidence in her shooting any one with anything, but if there ever was a weapon its the shotty in that case, that and i might burn through my pistol mag ythe time i get to the intruder(s) and need the shotty to take it out to the yard were the shotgun will really shine
