Anybody have any experience with this ammo? Looking to buy in bulk for Saiga .223.

Herter's is an ammo importer,they just repackage foreign ammo,if the ammo is steel case it's from one of the Russian manufactures.

I've heard that it is fairly reliable in the Saiga (no FTF or ejection problems ... just the occasional bad primer resulting in a dud) ... but it is painfully inconsistent on the paper at even 50 yards/meters.

Personally, I stay away from the Russian stuff, even just for plinking. When it is on sale (like right now at Cabela's), the PMC Bronze stuff is pretty good, and almost as cheap as buying the components to load your own FMJ .223.

That's what I go with in bulk. Just bought 2 cases (2000 rounds) at a recent gun show for $500.00.

Yeah, that is a good deal on the PMC bronze. I picked up some for my self at $6.50 a box. I was looking at MFS 7.62x39 made in Hungary. Cabela was running it on sale. $8 bucks a box, reloadable brass and copper jacketed bullets (not bimetal) I did the magnet test LOL. As I see it, those two things are in it's favor right off the bat. I passed on the Herters, It was $4 bucks a box, BTW Res45, it comes from Tula arsenal in Russia.

I didn't even know that Herters was still around? They used to have great catalogs when I was a kid. From Montana or South Dakota I think? Seems like I remember my Grandpappy using their powder for reloading ... or at least I remember seeing a big cardboard drum of powder with their name on it ... and no, I am not remembering Herc.

I know a lot of people confuse Herters with Hirtenberger, or "Hirt" as it is commonly referred to ... but we're talking two different companies altogether.

The Hert(ers) ammo I used to be familiar with was pretty darn good ammo. It would not surprise me if someone gobbled-up their name and started importing ammo under that name ... which seems to be a common practice these days.

Seems only thing they sell is imported stuff.

The original Herters went out of business along time ago. The new Herters is an import company. I believe the connection between the two, other than in name is thin at best.

It wouldn't supprise me in the least if Cabelas had a hand in bringing the Herters brand back into the marketplace. Since Cabelas is the only place I've found the herters line of ammo...It does add a little old school cachet to their image.

Far as I know, most all new Russian ammo, "Herter's", Wolf, Brown Bear, Tula, whatever all comes from the same mega plant complex in Tula, Russia, at least the .223 and 7.62 stuff.

Wolf used to sell lacquer coated, am told they've discontinued all of it.
Once they did that, was my understanding that all lacquer coated is now older/surplus ammo and not current manufacture from anywhere?

Brown Bear is still lacquer coated and so are a few others like the the Academy Sports brand. (which is brown bear)

Thats been our expirence, they are all the same when dissasembled, had to look. Just cheap Russian ammo?
