I have the option of getting a Mossy 590 or a Saiga 12.
I have never fired a shotgun but have hunted with a rifle for years.
It will be used just for HD.
So pros vs. cons of people who own one or both will help.

Thanks in advance

siaga has less recoil due to heavier frame weight and the action steals a large amount or recoil too. also it is faster to fully reload. they are both very reliable, although as always some ammunition will not cycle semi-autos properly. thats why i choose a pump over them as shotguns are very versatile, however you lose some of that with semi-autos. although my winchester over-under will always be my favorite for target shoots. so accurate.

I just bought a mossberg 500 tactical for my HD weapon. I am happier than a fat kid at mcdonalds with it.
I know that is not one of the guns you mentioned but it is another option to consider and costs less.

But in order to contribute to answering your question.. I would recommend the mossberg. I have had good experiences with owning them and extensive use in the military. Good guns!!

Get. The. Saiga-12.

You can always grab a cheaper pump later to back up your Saiga. But if you've got the funds to get a Saiga-12 I say go for it. And as mentioned above, don't forget extra mags and perhaps a drum if you can afford it.

This is pretty much the advice I got when looking for another shotgun. I got the Saiga and do not regret it in the least.

Have fun.

I do go for the Mossberg. Simple to operate, affordable. I have heard the Saiga shotguns do have some problems, not as reliable as it's 7.62x39 brother.

Saiga runs about 500-600 in most shops.

Also, If you do plan on duck hunting or other forms of hunting, that Saiga is not legal for hunting ducks. Also, the Saiga does not come with a choke, a big disadvantage ofr a shotgun. A muzzle mounted choke is available though. Another option is the remington 11-87. Very reliable.

I would recommend a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500/590. These two pump guns are the best selling guns in the U.S. and have after market products available for them to beat the band. Each is a pump shotgun which is the simplest to use and take care of. Which one you buy depends on which one feels right to you.

The Saiga is a neat gun and is cool but is a complex machine. One thing no-one is going to tell you is that when you load up a magazine or three of shells and take them to the range six months from now they may not work. Rifle type magazines for shotguns can compress the shells and deform them. Nothing in the world is worse than a gun that does not go bang when it is needed.
