As I do more research, I am finding it is also one of the toughest places to get out of. Being surrounded by deserts can be challenging when SHTF. I have been in the process of finding multiple BOL. I am also making my first bug out bike which consist of, a mtn. bike with a motor that gets up to 45mph and about 150 mpg. I am also getting involved in local homestead groups to learn advanced trapping, skinning and other survival techniques. Im not the bug out with guns blazing type(although I have been shooting most of my life)

I am here to learn and maybe even share some of the limited knowledge I have.

First Question -

I am planning on a weekend trip in 2 weeks to test some new gear. I would like to get some fishing in and practice shelter building so I would like some privacy outside my small group. I know So. Cal. sucks with no burn rules but not sure if there are any spots away from people? If not I would like to head up north but not sure if I am willing to hit the Sierras For just a weekend( even though it would be nice) any suggestions?

Another hi, from the same city. There were some nice places that would fit right in with what you want but there's a fire going on right now. Not a lot of other places available for what you want because of the restrictions in place due to the heat and dry grass. You'd have to go beyond local for that.

Might not be on your mind right now, but a good place to test out weight load on your ruck would be the Mission Trails area. I used that area to get ready for a lot of ruck marching ahead of me in the Army. Granted not everyone goes out there to test out 40-80lbs 12 mile time, but it gives you an idea of how to pack will wear on you, how the load will affect you, and which areas of your body start to fall apart from your things rubbing on you while you step out. Not only that but it will teach you the weight past 30-40lbs will always suck, it will always hurt after sufficient duration, but you find out your "rhythm" and eventually get better and go longer distances at a faster pace.

Welcome, Much to learn here.

Things to ponder follow:

Have a BOL (bug out location, if needed)?

Self-sufficient? Garden? Stored food?

Reload? Cast bullets? Practice with your firearms?

Practice permaculture? Gather wild foods?

-----------

Since bugging out may be problematic, have you considered moving out of the area now?

I'm just a little north of you ,welcome here. lots to learn .
As for camping with an open fire ,can't tell you . most of the places I know of in cal require a pit and permit. Especially because of the fire danger issues . Haven't had much rain this summer .
Go on line and check with forest service
