I have always been somewhat of a survivor, I was raised by my great grandparents. My ggfather was a WW II rifle instructor. He taught me how to shoot rabbits, and red squirrls when I was 8. He even taught me to recognize visible signs of diseases these animals had, and we would not eat the ones that under skin sores or white spots. I learned to garden with them and have done gardening on an off over the years. When my ggparents aged and could no longer care for me, I went to live with my great grandmother in Southeastern Alaska on an Island called Sokoloff. There we had no electricity or running water. We did have a wonderful artesian well and we carried water by buckets to the house. We also had a rain barrel set up for use for non drinking purposes although we could have drank it if we needed too. She furthered my living off the land education. We had a huge garden, we fished for salmon and clams, we canned and smoked fish, clams, veggies and made jams from the islands berries. I learned to cook wonderful meals, sew, crochet and knit from both my grandparents. I learned so many things from them that are too numerous to mention. Of course they are gone now, but I practice various skills I learned from them nearly everyday. I am 66 now, and I just recently moved to NY from Anchorage, AK. We will go back to Alaska every summer to fish for our Salmon. We fish for Sockeye's and I butcher and can both smoked and non-smoked pint jars right at the campsite on the Kenai River. Our RV sets there year round in a privately run campground. I retired from my work when I was just less than three weeks from being 65. I am a Social Worker, but I never worked for a State or government agency. I graduated from college with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work and was immediately hired and worked for the same company for over twenty years. We came to NY help take care of my husband's parents and we decided to stay in Upstate NY and only go Alaska in the summers for a few weeks. I want to start a garden do I will go with Hubby but only stay a couple of weeks. Well for now, I think I have taken up enough white space. I have always been as self sufficient as I can be, but now that I am retired I can learn more from you guys and will kick up my skills in survival a notch!
