G'day everybody, my name is DGE and I'm from Melbourne, Australia. I came across this forum while searching for survival/protection ideas and tips for my young family. I've always tried to be prepared for when SHYF of TEOTWAWKI but since my young son came along at the start of 2013, I've began to take it real serious.
I know a fair bit of self defence and I've been teaching those skills to my wife, she walks with our son for an hour a day in a pram so I'd like her to be prepared if she were ever attacked. She's extremely fit and has a solid mind, but even though she could hold her own I still feel more comfortable knowing she has a small can of pepper spray at the ready. We live in a great neighbourhood but lowlife scum do travel, and I feel it's better to be safe than sorry.
I keep a minimalist range of survival/defence 'tools' in my car at any given moment, and we are slowly but surely working toward a stocked lightweight BoB or two stashed in different rooms in the house.
I've joined this forum to gather ideas and tips for food/water rationing, energy storage/conservation and home/personal defence tips. I've drilled into the wife about the importance of taking as many alternate routes as possible when driving/cycling/walking anywhere, to always have an alternative in case of emergency. Bushfires are a serious threat here in Australia, so I'm constantly scouting safer and more efficient ways of escaping a burning bushland.
I have an extremely good knowledge of all things mechanical so I have been teaching my wife over the last few years a bunch of different tips and techniques for roadside emergency repairs on out vehicles, and how to be more resourceful and practical with household items.
This forum seems like an amazing resource of information, I found survivalistboards only yesterday but I've already spent hours browsing!
Thanks,
DGE
