I've seen a lot of people with hats. The guy on White Collar wears one every week.
How about looking up sleep paralysis.
On some occasions one can "awake" yet the centers of the brain controlling movement are still disabled, and one can experience hallucinations as if in a dream state.
Its a documented condition, associated with MIB phenomena.

I have been hunting around for archetypes and halucinations. I do remember once being told that it is not uncommon. Big foot, Aliens and so on. But I will need to reserch it properly I think.

MIB phenomenon is associated in the everyday waking state, in public,groups of people, stores,cars,phone calls,especially witnesses to UFO's and the Mothman. It is well documented by the community of Point Pleasant WV of MIB talking to people on the sidewalks and businesses when the Silver Bridge collapsed back in the 60's.

weird, i have read a lot of accounts that it seems that once they are aware that you have noticed them they tend to disappear. maybe its just glimpses of a parallel universe from time to time.

I see shadow people all the time out of the corner of my eye mostly. But one time my daughter and I walked downtown and stopped in a locar bar. I asked the bartender where the ladies room was and he said it's downstairs in the basement. I walked down the stairs and when I turned left there was a huge shadow man right in front of me. He had to be 7 feet tall, broad shoulders and fat. It was a very thick black thing that looked almost solid but I could see through him. I don't remember a hat because he was so tall I didn't notice. I'm used to ghosts and strange things so I went and did my business. I went back upstairs and said to the bartender "Do you know you have a ghost here"? He said yes he did. He was taining a young female to tend bar and when she heard it she freaked out and said she couldn't work there.

I've seen it out while "ghost" hunting in Pleasant Hill Louisiana. There is a house that is still standing that was used as a field expedient medical hospital during the civil war. The boards are covered in century old stained blood.
Me and my father in law had gotten permission from the land owner to be out there about 1 in the morning. This was after the annual reenactment of the battle of pleasant hill. So spirits/spooks/entities whatever you want to call it can draw upon that "energy" to manifest itself.
Anyways, twas about 1:15AM and we were fixing to leave. Had no clue if we had caught anything on video ( no play back ) or audio ( EVP setup) and nothing extra ordinary had happened.
As we began to leave the settlement "goes by the nickname dog trot house because of it's layout" we both snapped our necks into the breezeway. We BOTH seen a man standing their wearing a cowboy type had and a long trench coat. Soon as we blinked it was gone. I asked him if he saw at the same time he asked me. So we know we were not seeing things.
Later when we got to check out the recordings, found some very creepy stuff on the EVP recording as well as the video.

I did...once. With a friend of mine in the Pecos high country(aka Santa Fe national forest) we were getting firewood and we're out there for a whole day I saw the "man" first about 200 yards away standing amongst the treeline that hadn't been cut down yet. I called him tombstone, he was dressed like a character from the movie tombstone, black hat almost like a top hat, long black coat and black pants. Like an old west character. My friend said maybe it was from all the hangings they did up there to outlaws and law keepers in the old west. Second time same tree line later in the day, my friend then said there we're hunters up there doing some deer w/ muzzle loaders. But he was just standing there looking at us. third time was driving down with 2 cords or wood and I saw him standing about 50 yards into the woods while driving at about 15 miles an hour down the dirt road. Pretty scary, I don't believe in ghosts but it's got me thinking.
EDIT: I've never shared this story with anyone but my friend who was there....ever. I just posted it since other people posted similar....good, I'm not crazy...lol.

Thank you for your contribution! That was EXACTLY what the man I saw looked like. Thanks to your comparison, I now have a way of sharing what I saw with those of open mind or who have had similar experiences. No other description seemed to really fit until now.
Thanks, like I said I don't believe in ghosts(either heaven and hell period.) however, I do believe there are angels and devils wondering this planet I got very creepy vibes so I don't think it was a good one.
