I am looking to heat seal my Mylar bags for food storage. Do I really need to spend over $100 for a Hand Held Heat Sealer that I will only use every once in a while, or should I just use my household clothes iron? Has anyone used both methods and has recommendations?

The cheap side of my thinks I should just buy a $20 Flat Hair Iron at some discount store, but the other side of me thinks I should do it the right way and spend the money on a professional sealer.

Which is the best method for cost and effectiveness? I don't want to spend a few hundred dollars on a bunch of dry food, only to have oxygen leak in because I did a poor heat seal job with a household iron. But if using the iron works for most people, I am all for saving a buck.

Recommendations?

Thanks!

I used a regular household iron on the highest setting and a metal level. Worked perfectly. I wouldn't waste the money on the heat sealer.
