Officers were first called to reports of shots being fired in Duke Street, Whitehaven at around 10.35am.

Ambulance staff are treating several casualties at the scene and one person died in the shooting, police said.
Minutes later police said there were reports of people being injured in further shootings in nearby Seascale and Egremont.

Armed police are scouring the area in search of a shaven-headed man aged in his thirties driving a grey or silver Citroen Picasso car, who is thought to have been involved in the incidents.
Wonder how this will pan out, one confirmed death but news it reporting 7 seperate shootings with at least 3 involving fatalities.

Also have to wonder how the law-makers will strip our rights in response.

Thoughts?

I just hope the shotgun used is stolen rather than some nut going on the rampage with a legally owned firearm. Otherwise hundreds of thousands of innocent owners will probably have to be labelled 'part of a sinister gun culture' and be subjected to being akin to paedophiles in their evil nature. Then the usual gun grab venture.

1.30pm, Theres just been a news flash on Channel 4 about this.

They are advising all in the area of Cumbria to stay indoors. They know the guy, his a taxi driver who is on foot, gun in hand.

Sending lots of thoughts for safekeeping up to Cumbria, and a quick arrest.

Can you stop referring to these bozos as 'law-makers', they are expense fiddling, thieving scumbags, who create 'laws' to restrict the 'little guy' and benefit their pals in the banks......

I hear what you are saying on gun control though, they will use this story, to crack down on legal firearms owners.

I hear what you're saying and feel the exact same way. Their noses need out of the 'little guys' life.

Really hope this doesn't come to bite the legal firearm owners and future firearm owners.

We just need to make it our job to have as many legal, safe and respectful owners as possible to try to counter things like this

Derrick Bird, 52, from Rowrah, near Frizington.
Police have issued a photograph of him and urge anyone who sees him to dial 999.

Sadly the picture issued looks just like the passport sized photograph on a shotgun certificate. I expect by tea time we'll all be lumped in with this tosser as the enemy within and socially inadequate. The usual cliches - and with a new Government just elected (if you can call it that) it'd be an ideal excuse to distract the plebs with some bread and circus legislation.

Its 12 dead now, I don't hold out much hope for gun-owners now even though most are responsible and it is a few random events and media witch-hunting that gives it a bad name. Makes me think that if someone else there had had a gun it could have ended differently.

I didn't see it...
Was it actualy balanced or was that sarcasm?

No man.

We usually see Paxman being ruthless and taking people (politicians) apart.

He made it clear several times that things like this are incredibly rare in our society.

He gave time for people to talk and didn't interrupt and interject with other points.

He wasn't alarmist or sensationalist, it was sensitively done and the MP for that area of Cumbria at the end of the interview said that he'd done interviews all day and that he wanted to thank the show for its questions, lack of sensationalism and respect of the subject.

They'd had a representative of BASC (a 32yr former police officer) and they also had a highly respected shrink.

It was a good program.

That's encouraging. However, the shootings came too late to be in the likes of the Daily Mail, The Sun, The Star, and all the other comics to print the story. Things may be very different once the tabloids have whipped the plebs up into a frothy rage for all the cheap TV shows to capitalize on.

I expect to see the pinched little face of Anne Pearson (Snowdrop) agonizing all over the TV in the very near future. She'll be overjoyed to have her fifteen minutes of fame all over again.

By the way, here's an interesting read from Sean Gabb - whom I came to know quite well during my time at Oxford university.

From reporter on BBC:
In relation to the .22 rifle
"A large, powerful , telescopic, semi-automatic hunting rifle"

Large? Powerful? Do they have to use the word hunting? They just make it seem like it's a rifle made for killing other people.

Talking about the 2 guns
"Which he may have inhereited from his father, an arsenal of weapons"

Who else wishes they hadn't been born into a gun ignorant culture, making it difficult to legal own firearms and enjoy shooting?

Memorials, sick jokes doing the rounds, witness statements, background news.

Nothing regarding tightening of the law which doesn't surprise me tbh Cam the man being of the hooray henry crowd and Clegg the peg being an idiot.

I wish things will be kept sensible also.Guess we can kiss goodbye to more of our rights to legally hold firearms. I was an international target pistol competitor at one time.Only memories now. The media can cause a lot of crap with inaccurate nonsense from so called experts on firearms.
