I tried this method with Yukon Gold and French Fingerling, both varieties which DO NOT apparently set fruit throughout the season, I found. I had three feet of soil and mulch and only a few potatoes in the very bottom, none further up on the stems. Maybe ten pounds total from about six plants. Before you bother, best do some further research on the varieties of potatoes which do continue to flower. I have read that there are some.
Thanks for the information.

What zone are you in? & when did you plant?
