Last weekend my son and I went on a day hiking trip. Before we left the truck I got out the Garmin GPS and the topo maps and saved the truck as a waypoint. We then hiked to a local creek and had lunch with eversafe meals - which are kinda like MREs.

From the creek we went back up the hill, through a dense pine thicket and back to the truck.

Looks like a nice day hike. I've been telling my daughter that we will be hiking/camping soon. She packed all the bug spray, flashlights and the first aid kit, just so we would be ready...lol.

Sounds like you need to take that girl on a camping hiking trip. The weather is cooling off, and getting nice.

I agree with the flashlight/battery talk. I have nothing against surefire(great/intended for tactical use), but when it comes to survival. that will be my backup to the backup.

Kev, I have the same GPS unit you do. I can't see spending the big bucks for one with a map and all that when the wise person will take a paper map with them into the woods anyway (as back up for the GPS, if nothing else).

I can always fix my location on the map by lat./long. and then I know exactly were I am. Plus I think a good paper map is clearer and generally better than the "super-duper gizmo" map.
