I recently purchased a civilian version of an M40 gas mask (it was prior police equipment is what I was told) for $35 at a gun show. I have been looking for an XM50/M50 online for months now and have not been able to find one reasonably priced (<=$350) and thought this could supplement for the time being. I was wondering if anyone could advise on the best filters to buy. I am overwhelmed by the nomenclature, even as a biologist.

Does the expiration date matter? (I have been told that it only matters if it is sealed, but I would prefer someone with knowledge to answer that question).

What are the differences between the military and civilian and if money was no object, what should i buy?

I am not finding many filters newly produced online.

You my friend need to look at a big green floppy book that doesn't fit on a shelf called NIOSH. there you will learn about filters and find one that fits what hazards in your area.

Those filters from LAPolice gear look O.K. and fresh.
