I saw this video and thought expanding on it a little.
make the stick as described then coat the fuzz end with pitch,sap etc and make a torch. It could provide light,heat and smoke to keep the skeeters away from camp.

Ja I agree with Mr Sticks on that, moving the wood is a good way, I ve tried the way Ray Mears does it but usually end up cutting too deep, good one.
