Fuel Storage

Can gasoline be stored in the 225 gallon leg style polyethylene storage tanks? Says they can be used for chemicals, fertilizers and water. Is does not say not to be used with fuel. I’ve seen several farmers used the 250 gal plastic skid tanks in the metal cage to store gasoline. If they are impervious to chemicals why can’t they be used for gasoline storage?

This is exactly what I use w/stabilizer These totes are cheap and seem to be very stable. I first began using them when I was dozing and was using a lot of fuel.

The ONLY thing I noticed is that they expand and contract a great deal with a tight seal on the lid. I "burp" mine, but wonder if I am burping out octane with each burp!

I asked one of our material experts the same thing last month, polyethylene is not hermetic. I contains water and aquious solutions because they are bipolar molucules, meaning they are bent and hold a slight charge.

Unless it is specifically formulated to contain hydrocarbon vapors, it will allow a lot of the light compounds to escape over time through evaporation.

If you can, a better choice would be metal 55 gal drums or 225 gal fuel oil tanks designed for home heating systems.

I spoke with a representative relative to this myself. He said not as is, but that they can custom build a fuel bladder to go into the receptacle. I was talking about a 600 gallon or so setup. The bladder was $1800.00.

There are materials used for fuel storage. Just apparently not poly.

First, food grade polyethylene barrels are NOT for fuels and oils!

You did not say what you are going to use the tank for or where it would be stored so, make sure you choose a tank that is safe and approved for fuel storage and its intended use by a group like Underwriters Laboratories. Chevron has also posted some storage recommendations at this link.

While high-density polyethylene (HDPE) tanks work well for many chemicals (sometimes even motor oil or diesel), they are not well-suited for certain others including chlorinated hydrocarbons such as gasoline, solvents, aromatics, or strong oxidizers. However, some HDPE Fuel and Oil tanks could work in the short-term for gasoline storage but there is a long-term potential for the container to become saturated with fuel, since gasoline is able to permeate HDPE. Essentially, polyethylene should not be used to store gasoline I would get an approved container.

For long-term storage of gasoline, you might want to look into racing fuels. Some racing fuels have close to unlimited shelf life if stored properly. In another thread, contact00 posted this link, www.vpracingfuels.com, which looks like a better source for race fuel than the one I have used.
