I don't know if this belongs in the hiking forum of not.....

Anyways.... if needed and you need to go a distance on foot what foot wear to you choose? Broken in military boots? Good quality hiking boots?

I'm going to purchase in the next week or so and have been looking at options. I really like the Belleville Combat boots I bought my son for his ROTC happenings but I would think for distance travelling a high ankle boot, while offering good stability, would consume some energy.

Thoughts?

I have read that every extra pound on your foot is like an extra five on your back. I have backpacked extensively and I think that's about right.

I switched to hiking footwear that heavily resembles athletic footwear. They are much lighter and very durable. I recommend trying this type of footwear on before making your purchase.

It all depends on your preference of course.

That is basically the point of my thread to be honest though I didn't say it. Lots of fine hiking boots out there but of course you don't get the high ankle support of a military type boot. When walking distances I'm sure the extra ease of walking would be an acceptable trade off.

I like 5.11 8" A.T.A.C storm. I got them for when I ride my motorcycle, but have ended up wearing them all the time. I bought them in 2006 and still have them. Fairly lightweight, side zipper. waterproof.
They were designed for police use and long hours. They ran a special in them last year, so I ordered another pair but they are still in the closet. I got them from LA Police Gear, good people to deal with.

I got some of the new under armour boots and so far they are extremely pleasing to wear! The only downfall is they are a little tough to break in but they fit like a glove now. They are more of a hybrid boot, I wouldn't wear them everyday for obvious reasons but if SHTF they will be staying on my feet!

I have worn the standard issue USMC combat and Jungle boots as well as the black steel toed flight deck boots when I was at sea.

Boots and shoes are EXTREMELY hard for me to find that work as I broke my left foot twice while in the military and now require wide boots.

The most comfortable boots I have EVER WORN were KEENs. I have a pair of the mid ankle boots from REi and wear them everyday. They are waterproof but I have never been over heated in them. I want to go back for the high tops as well.
