I use Braided line, it doesn't develop memory. I keep it wrapped in an old Teflon tape container....cut a notch to hold the line tight after its wrapped on the inner reel, then replace the outer cover.holds tons of line, compact, and can act as a reel of sorts. Fits in an altoids tin.

To those who keep mono line on a small diameter round object....how bad is that line memory after a year or two in your bag? My guess is it looks like a slinky when unwrapped.

I have had line on spools for several years and the mono line doesn't come out slinky like. If on the right size spool it will be fine. Also, letting it warm a little removes its memory and become fairly straight again.

This year at Walmart I found 100ft spools of mono line in 4 - 12 pound test. The spool is fairly small in diameter and thickness making it great for a bag.

I keep both braided and mono in my main bag and stick with mono in smaller bags due to its tendency to rat nest less and come apart easier and faster.

I keep a few hooks....small treble hooks, small smelled hooks and a few normal type hooks of various sizes. I like to have options.
From my kit I can make a decent size trot line and have extra to fish normally.

Sgtlong, the key to that is "right size spool"....I see many folks wrapping line on cigar tubes, around a pencil or other small diameter object. My experience has been that my ultralight reels (smaller diameter than normal)...the mono I was using developed pretty bad memory, drastically reducing its effectiveness and I switched those reels over to braid.

I wrap it on one of the flat kite string winders. Works fine as a reel, too. Have it in a small tin just a bit larger than an Altoids tin, along with a full fishing kit that includes single hooks, snap swivels, treble hooks, snelled hooks, metal leaders, sinkers, floats, and 6 small dressed spinners, which I find to be the most effective alternative to live bait for more types of fish than anything else I've found that will keep long term in a kit. Also a hank of #42 bank line to make a trotline with.

Just my opinion.

I got a real good deal on a rod and reel at a yardsale a while ago. It had really heavy line on it, like 50# mono or so. I used a wood pencil in an cordless drill to unspool and save the line. It sat probably a year and a half or so in the pencil. I had a project a few weeks ago I needed a short piece of mono for, found the pencil, yep it came off looking like a slinky.

Any reel I want over 8# on I use spiderwire. I use the teflon tape spool too, works great. I like the kite winder idea too.

I'd never thought of the Teflon tape container, but its a great idea.
I use a small plastic hand line, is very light holds a good amount of line, is tangle free and when you cast the line peels off freely.
I've attached the hand line to my belt and the line to a home made bowfishing arrow, fired from a small bow, line peeled off freely. When using the bow, Hand line can also held with your foot.
I also have a bobbin from a sewing machine that has 1kg mono on it, is small, keeps it nice and neat,Is there if anything needs to be mended.

I keep fishing line , but not for fishing, IMo, line fishing is a great waste of time and energy in the bush, a fish trap or cast net is 10X better.

I have fishing line to repair gear and nets and for perimeter alarms.
depends on where you are I guess, around here fishing is a very definite possibility for food. not that your going to do any bass or musky fishing but if the situation becomes you can catch trout in any creek around here with just a basic line/hook, you don't even need a pole. and every mud puddle in Wisconsin has bullheads in it, again very easy to catch with basic line/hook

all my kits have fishing gear in them, I use bobbins also and have one of line and one of dental floss, along with various sized hooks and splitshots

Im kind of split on the braided vs mono thing, I like braided but have noticed sometimes spooky species of fish kind of shy away from it, maybe its just me... but I carry monofilament just because of that

I understand the spooky thing....trout won't be on my radar, not very prevalent where I will fish with my kit should the need arise.
Bass, catfish, other non picky panfish will be my targets.
