I agree ... practice makes us better (nothing makes us perfect). The word "chili" made me hungry. :

I haven`t broke into my freezed dried can but I bought some mountain house freeze dried to try out and it was fantastic. Cooked up nice on my little camp stove. Now I take one with me everytime I go offroading for lunch.

What kind of aluminum kit are you using? I hope its not those cheap kits from walmart.

I use a MSR stainless steel pot.

I am glad you are trying out your gear. It is critical to being able to function in an emergency. I often encounter scenarios where I need another item or need to make a modification in order to get a piece of gear to perform in the manner that I want. Had I not put my gear through the paces, I would never know that until it was too late to make amends.

I am often amused by people who have survival gear sitting in boxes in the closet. They don't have a clue of how to use them effectively, whether all the components are in the boxes, or even if they will do what is intended.

You're doing the wise thing.

It was about $25 from an Army/Navy surplus store and was packaged for the Boy Scouts. I would like to upgrade eventually and am aware of excessive aluminum exposure.
