How long is the Swedish Firesteel Army model, in inches? And do the Army models last very long? I'm really considering buying one now. I still prefer the magnesium firestarter, but I like the huge sparking rod on one of these. Can someone show me a picture of their firesteel, how worn out it is, and the size of it? Thanks,

I own a Boy Scout Hot Spark and a Light My Fire Scout. Once I used them I pitched the magnesium bar off a cliff! Try it. Oh, and JRE industries makes a sheath for the Mora 510/ Maartini M571 that has a built in loop for a firesteel.
I have a pair of Light My Fire Scouts and I agree wholeheartedly. I don't even think I have a magnesium bar anymore. Getting that magnesium in a little pile was for the birds. I use either jellied cotton balls (mostly) or sometimes char cloth. I still like char cloth for some reason, maybe because I can make it easily. You sure can tell when I'm making it in a campfire tho, phew!

<highjack>

Let me just highjack this thread for just a minute.

I do not see VIP member next to your name, nor do I ever remember you donating anything in the past.

Do you really think this site is free to me (the owner)? Every month I have to pay a server bill, then there is my time to keep the site up to date, install security patches, listen to members complain, do back ups, maintain the database, promote this site, make videos and the list goes on and on .........

And you want to refer people to other sites to buy their gear? Now really, what is wrong here? We have an online store - http://www.survivalistboards.com/store.php where people can shop Amazon and Ebay. A commission from the sales goes to keep this site online. But that is not good enough for you. You have to refer people to other sites?

Do you see any banners or ads on this site? But you come here, use this site, then insult the membership and ownership of this community be sending people somewhere else to buy stuff?

Have you for a single second, thought about what you are doing??

And, its not just my store, its the resellers that have merchant accounts here - http://www.survivalistboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24

These people support this community. If they do not make sales, they will not renew their accounts, if they do not renew their accounts this site looses revenue.

I really do not want to put banners on this site. But with members referring their business elsewhere, this behavior is detrimental to the whole community.

That was a bit harsh. With all respect, Kev, what you do here is incredible (and I've hardly earned my own keep), I certainly know that you're the boss, and I think I've read that guideline here somewhere, but at the moment, that is not found in either of the Stickies under Rules and Guidelines. Directing him where that can be found may be helpful [for others as well, perhaps].

No kidding. People on this website are always sharing information on where to get good deals on gear and supplies. I don't know why Kev is picking on this one person.

And quite frankly, I appreciate being told where I can save some money. If this website is going to become commercialized to the point where information is surpressed, then it's no longer a site worth visiting.

What would happen if you walked into wal-mart and started handing out flyers for k-mart or sears? Chances are you would be thrown out of the store. That is the same thing here. We have resellers that sell their stuff on this site, but certain members tell other members to go elsewhere.

The resellers have their merchant accounts here - http://www.survivalistboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24

I try to only refer business to resellers that are members of this community.

I bet goinggear.com do not have a single link back to this site, nor is the owner of that store a member here. By posting links in this forum, the members here are improving those stores page rank and traffic.

The goal is not to suppress information, but to provide the members of this community with the best options. Instead of posting links, why not invite the store owners to become a member of this community?

================EDIT==================

I contacted going gear and asked them to join this community. At least then they would have a membership here.

:)

Wow, I had no idea it was wrong to help people find a good deal on a product. I have not spent time reading all the rules and regulations of this site. I thought this site was about Survivalist Forums. One would think that finding a good deal on a product would be something that should be shared. I question why anyone would want to keep others in the dark about something that is better. I hope some day we can do away with the idea of centering our lives around ourselves and truly work with one another to help in hard times such as these.

I have my own business as well. And with this business there is great competition. I would not insult someone publicly because they left to go to another competitor.

Let this serve as a warning about a person's true intention. There are only two forces in this universe... creating and destructing. I was here to create the idea of something better.

I'm sure this will get me thrown off this website, but I have to ask myself. Would I really want to be here with people who don't want to help others.

Your not going to get thrown off this site.

How can telling people to leave this site be something better? Please, explain it to me - how can telling people not to shop at a store be helping that store? I thought increasing sales was a good thing, or am I wrong?

If you use something (like this site), and you discourage people from shopping at the stores of the people who support this site (the merchants), how is that helping this community? Where is the greater good in telling people to leave this site?

The greater good would be to contact a store and ask them to join this community. That way we build membership, the community is stronger and members have competition from merchants. I contacted gogear and asked them to join this community.

Instead of referring people away from this site, refer vendors to us. That way the community and this site grows stronger.

The Store is meant to supplement the community, not the other way around. I agree, you should not promote a store's competitors in their own store. However, I do not believe that the majority of the people on this site see it as a store.

Kev

The worst part is you wouldent have lost any "money" becuse of this. The link gnosticwisdom refrenced sells a product you dont sell! Unless I am looking in the wrong place, where do you sell Ferro rods to make your own firestarters ?

Then you have the nerve to :

"The greater good would be to contact a store and ask them to join this community."

Thats not our place, I'm not going to go out and further your intrests. Its seems pretty clear these are just your intrests and not the "community" !

I'm sad to say the way you handeled this whole thing Kev was wrong. You should have contacted gnosticwisdom via a private message not bombed on him on a post. I would be embarrassed if I treated someone like that.

I have and will continue to refrence people to other sites. Mainley becuse your "Store" sucks. There are alot of things I purchase that you dont sell (or) are overpriced. You cant have a open Forum to exchange free ideas and honest thoughts and expect it to work towards your own intrests.

I had alot of respect for you up untill this little temper tantrum:mad:

I think you summed it up well yourself:

"this behavior is detrimental to the whole community"

apology ?
