I was wondering if It is safe to use chunks of a firelog to boil water for coffee,and other things to eat while hiking, i did a search but could not find any info thanks for any advice.

Are you talking about the glue and sawdust logs or the compressed waxed cardboard? The waxed cardboard says on the box you can use them for cooking.

I use chunks of a Duralog in my esbit type stove. The log produces black smoke, but it doesn't magically go thru the metal pan and into the water.

Wow i just read what i wrote there. Sounds a little smartass-ish but wasnt meant to be. The firelogs should work fine. I've used them before with no ill effects.

No worries dougzilla I'm laid back, the logs are pine mountain and look to be made with sawdust and compressed & sticky I'm not sure if I'm going to use them yet the older you get the more concerned you get about your health depends what the pro's think thanks.

I wouldnt roast meat over a pine mountain log. Dutch oven cooking may be fine.

I say that it would be fine as long as the fumes and flame are not in direct contact with the food. For example, boiling a pot with a lid, steaming, etc. But I would not cook a hot-dog on it.

Yeah no hot dogs but thanks for pointing out the lid very good point, well I think I'll go ahead and use it but I'll make sure that is far enough away & has a lid thanks for all the advise. Stay safe!
