With my newest addition, my FNX-45, I finally have what we call the "Big 5" of guns. That being a long range high power rifle, a shotgun, a MBR, a combat pistol, and a 22 rifle or pistol. Now my "Big 5" consists of Remington 700 in 7mm Mag with Nikon Monarch 5.5-16.5x40 scope, Remington 870 SuperMag, Colt 6920 Magpul OD with EoTech 517, FNX-45 Pistol, and Ruger 10/22 takedown. It feels good knowing I have hit that marker. I'll have to post a picture of the 5 later. Maybe next will be a surplus rifle like a Mosin or SKS.

Good deal, love to see pics! Never heard it called the "big five" before. I guess mine would be my S&W bolt action 30-06, My Mossberg 500 12g persuader, My Stag Model 3 5.56 AR-15, My Glock 19 Gen 4 9mm, and my Ruger 77/22 rifle or Ruger Single Six 22lr pistol. But I love guns so much I have expanded to have like the "big 25". There like chips you can't have just one, it's an addiction. Keep on going, buy more and buy lots of magazines and ammo.

Which one is the MBR ? Didn't see it in the list ...

I guess I should elaborate; MBR usually denotes Main Battle Rifle. This is typically a select fire or semi-automatic military service rifle that fires full power rifle cartridges. An AR-10 style rifle, a M1A, FAL, M1, etc I would consider in this category.

An AR-15 falls more into line with a standard issue rifle or service rifle as it fires an intermediate cartridge. Some would say it falls into the assault weapons category- but it is not select fire nor is it capable of full auto fire.. I would classify it as a semi-automatic military style sporting rifle..

I thought about posting this but decided against it because there are a lot of people that get butthurt around here when you correct their mall ninja lingo.

We go WAY out of our way to correct people throwing around the term "assault rifle" or "assault weapon" when it comes to gun control etc but then we have people calling their stuff Battle Rifles which are heavier caliber "assault rifles." Let's not only call our sporting rifle an assault rifle, but skip right over it and call it a beastmode assault rifle aka Battle Rifle. :zombie

Oh well at least these guys feel cool when they say it. BTW OP this isn't a slam on you. You hang out here and a majority of the people here spit this kinda lingo nonstop. It's only natural that you'd pick it up with the regularity you see it.

In other news... OP congrats on getting your setup completed!

God forbid you just use correct terminology. I still don't understand why there's so much resistance on this. Guys that actually get into "battles" and firefights don't call those battle rifles. We get it. It makes you feel awesome to talk about your MBR/Battle Rifle. Just understand that unless you're talking to someone else that doesn't know any better you sound stupid. :thumb:

Some of us are doing our damnedest to make sure that gun owners don't get this reputation. Apparently others are doing their damnedest to sound cool even if it does make us sound stupid.

Words and terms mean things. How many "clips" do you have for your 10/22 :)? Battle rifle has a defined and specific meaning. I fought it too and finally came around. We need to have a shared vocabulary.

Didn't say it earlier but you have a really nice collection. I still need my bolt action center fire rifle and I will be there. Your 700 is EXACTLY what I would like to get my hands on except in .308. Thanks for sharing.

The bolt action high power rifle is often the last bought because it can be costly. Rifle and a good glass is easily over $1000. Then ammo which is over 1, sometimes 2 dollars a shot even if you reload. But the big advantage is the sheer power. Sure you can kill a deer or hog with an AR or AK, but having the ability to drop one at 300 yards with a well placed shot is second to none. A 55gr 223 bullet has about 1200 FPE whereas the 7mm has around 3000.

I was jesting - to a degree- about the "MBR" - i.e. where is it ?

I like arnoldrew's comment - "my fightin' gun". IMO, there's nothing essentially wrong with the 5.56 M4; it's perfectly capable as is. Nope, I don't drink the koolaid that says you need .308. Most don't; 5.56 will do the trick for most things.

However, at the range, I like to shoot water bottles, clays, stuffed animals, etc. A .22LR is only so much fun with these. 5.56 - a bit more. .308 tends to be quite the party animal. .300 Win Mag- just plain awesome- but pricey.

Congrats on your big 5 though. It's a good mark.. Really like the pistol... I imagine that 7mm is a thrill to shoot, but pricey. I know- have a .300 Win Mag that does not see enough range time. FWIW- I bought the .300 WM with credit card points- no cash out of my pocket. Semi-auto to boot.
My initial thought was to use the .300 WM for the fun stuff; sounds like a cannon. But pricey- it's significantly cheaper with .308 in bulk- especially for range stuff.

I would suggest a .308 - just because it's cheaper in bulk- and .308 is more fun for blowing stuff up ;). Range ammo for .308 in bulk- is about 70¢, compared to 5.56 at 50¢.

I don't know other people's opinion on reloading; everyone I've heard suggest that it's usually for accuracy more than costs saving. The time, effort, & risk does not make it worthwhile- yet- If I had a range outside my back door- I would though. To try out a few reloaded rounds- for me- takes the better part of an afternoon. I do collect my brass- just in case ...

I can count on one hand the times over the years of selling firearms that I haveever hhad a customer ask for a "main battle rifle", in fact the only occasions I can recall were the typical "COD ninjas who thought that they knew more than anyone else, coming into the shop and seeing real firearms for the first time" (but they call them "battle rifles" or "check out this heavy squad support rifle (M1A)!").

It is a semantic issue, especially as the definition as I understand it's origins was to differentiate between, for example, the M1 Garande and Carbine, two drastically different cartridges when it comes to power.
With the increasing popularity of rounds such as the 6.8, 300BLK, and the 6.5G amongst others, I don't feel that there is any one place where you can draw a line in the sand and say "this is my Manly 'Battle' Rifle, and those are just regular rifles"... I don't know about this board, but usually when I have seen people get themselves in a twist, that 'magic line' just happens to be right below whatever they currently own.

With terms that are NOT TECHNICAL and WILL NOT be a source of legitimate confusion, why can't we just go with the common parlance? Why can't an AR15 be an "MBR", does it not exist Mainly as a Rifle for Battle/combat use?

OP: Very nice collection you have got going! Thumbs up!

I like that you're covering your bases. in my Big 5 line up, I went by caliber with the idea that scavenging ammo would be necessary at some point. so I made sure that I had weapons that fired common rounds; 12g (stevens pump), 5.56/.223 (custom mini-14), 9mm (ruger lc9), .45 (1911), .40 (S&W 99). as an add on I added a piston AR chambered in 5.45x39 (adams arms upper/spikes multi cal lower) because I have bought a metric s-ton of it to store and cache. I also am aiming at a same make/model upper in 5.56 to stash with that ammo.

This was the foundation for my gun collecting... But then I needed to have fall back guns in case one of my main guns failed, and now I need guns that fill the gap between caliber sizes.

I also need extra clips for my 5.56 AR-15 main battle rifle because all this vocabulary griping reminds me of feminists being offended by words and thoughts they consider un-PC. Jerks that want to control how we speak and think are why we have a 2nd Amendment.

Freedom of speech, is actually covered in the 1st amendment. No one questions your right to say and use whatever words you want. You have proved that no one can control how you speak, especially you it seems.

BUT

We have the right to form opinions based on the words that come out of your mouth or type. Words are powerful and have meaning, saying they don't or "who cares" only confirms ones ignorance.

My "big 5" are the same as the OP. Long range rifle, MBR (look, I said "MBR", I'm obviously just a mall ninja), small caliber carbine, defensive handgun and a shotgun.

I have:

Colt M4
Ruger 10/22
Mossberg 500 12 gauge
Glock 17

I still need a long range rifle. Looking at a Remington 700 in .308.

Outside of my "big 5" I have a Walther P22 and a new Ruger LC380.
