Sometimes i find i wish i had some way of alerting me if someone was to approach my camp site, especially at night. I know there are commercial alarms available and its possible to make all manner of different contraptions out of different store bought materials.
I decided though, to give it a go out of what i usually carry in my pack and using simple primitive trap mechanics. Here is what i came up with....
The green line to the left is the trip wire and the brown line to the right is attached to a bent sapling. I've heard this called an 'Apache limp wire set'.
I threaded a simple loop of line thru my camp cooking gear and attached it to the spring line with a toggle. I carry this gear all the time so it makes sense to use it. When the 'trap' is sprung the sapling flings the cookware up in the air and they make quite a racket when banged together.
The spring sapling, a young Sheoak.
The 'trip wire'. Note that the line doesn't need to be taut which makes it much easier to set and harder to spot. With this set up you can cover quite a large area. With fishing line and some screw in 'eye-bolts' it's conceivable you could you cover your entire perimetre with one line.
NOTE: Video to follow when i get to a PC.
